They're usually equipped with more powerful motors and the majority of upright units transition between a beater head for carpets and a static suction for bare floors.

Canister Vacuums
Maneuverability is at the top of the list for canister vacuum benefits, and these units are great for homes with more than just carpet. Many people like the ease of vacuuming under coffee tables, over stairs, and on upholstery - an impossible task with a traditional upright unit. If you have multiple floor surfaces in your home or office, a canister vacuum is probably for you.

Carpet Shampooers
If you're looking to remove set in stains from your carpet, look for a carpet shampooer. Basic units usually come equipped with a built-in heater that warms the mix of cleaning agents and water.
