SETTING UP AND TROUBLESHOOTING COMMON SPACE HEATER ISSUES
Setting up a space heater is not difficult. All you need to do is unpack and plug it in and you are ready to go. You do need to exercise certain precautions when using space heaters. The first thing you should look into is the placement of the heater. Space heaters use tungsten filaments and elements for heating. If clothing items or drapes get too close to it, they may catch fire. So, you should avoid keeping flammable items near the space heater.
Space heaters are durable appliances. However, they may develop certain faults. Often these faults can be repaired by simple troubleshooting tips:
- Unit not turning On: One of the most common issues you will come across with space heaters is that the unit does not turn on. If this is the case, check the switch. At times, the switch is not a snug fit for the socket and may not give power to the unit. Also check for a blown fuse. You can access the heater's fuse by following the instructions in the owner's manual.
- Fan Not Working: Should you ever come across a non-functional fan, check the fan wiring. The wiring should be connected to the motor. If not, the fan will not work. Also check for obstructions. If the fan is obstructed, it will not spin.
- No Heat: Another issue that is quite common with space heaters is lack of heat. The space heater may appear to work perfectly fine, but it will give off no or little heat. First check the thermostat. If the thermostat settings are fine, you may have a faulty element.
Maintaining a space heater is extremely important. If you maintain your space heater properly, it should last you a long while. Space heater elements may gather dust over time and become faulty. You have to gently clean the element for gathered dust.
Cleaning does not have to be performed as often. Typically, a space heater needs cleaning once a month. But if it is in frequent use, you should clean it twice in a month.
Keep it away from children and pets. Not only could it hurt them, but children and pets could disrupt the controls of the heater and cause it to malfunction.
Space heaters need to be stored carefully. You have to see to it that the space heater is clean when you store it. Clean the space heater properly. The element and tungsten heaters need to be cleaned. Once the heater is clean, cover and store it properly. It is recommended that you store the heater in its original packaging to prevent damage. But it is not always convenient to retain the original packing materials. In that case, cover the heater in plastic. See to it that the heater does not get damaged by the surrounding items.
Space heaters are generally quite safe. But at times they malfunction and may cause a fire. This is why you have to make sure that your space heater is maintained properly. At times, the exterior of the space heater gets quite hot. So, you should keep children and pets away from space heaters for the same reason. You should also keep heaters away from drapes and clothing items to prevent burning.
