I purchased this grill because I am on an extended stay in my camper while out of town. I had been looking at another grill, but as I was researching I came across the infrared grill discussions and decided to look further into it.
There are several on the market that would work for a small camper situation so I focused on a couple of specific ones. My priorities were that any grill I ended up with would be compact, storable, and able to connect to a regular propane tank (opposed to those 1lb throwaways). With those specifications in mind, the Solaire Everywhere grill fills the bill completely.
I have never used an infrared grill before so this was a first, and the next test was performance. When the grill arrived, I had my steaks already aged in the refrigerator and seasoned. The 20 minutes initial setup was completed and I fired it up. All good so far. The element quickly turned a glowing orange-red and I knew it was ready. It is fast to heat up.
Some reviews said that infrared grills tend to turn a lovely piece of steak into charcoal briquettes. So I was a little hesitant the first time. I have now grilled two steaks, and some hamburgers on the grill, and I can say that all the negative comments were wrong. The two steaks have been the most perfectly cooked steaks I have ever cooked (I'm 58 and have cooked a lot of steaks!) and the burgers were juicy and flavorful.
The one trait that it touted about the infrared grilling process is that it sears the outside and leaves the middle more juicy and flavorful. I found this to be absolutely true. The grill left nice grill marks on the outside of the meat, but, when the temp is turned down for the main cooking process, it cooks the inside to perfection. I still have to try it with veggies and pork.
Without reservation, I recommend this grill for any time a small cooking capacity is in order. Because of the size of the grilling area, I don't think it would be adequate for larger parties and groups.
