Our basement was very damp, causing mold problems and often a humidity problem on the main floor. We ran 2 dehumidifiers 24/7, which ran up our electric bill while never eliminating enough humidity. Because our dehumidifiers were older, we replaced them with larger, newer "energy efficient" models of Whirlpool and Frigidaire. The new units ran our electric bill even higher without solving the problem. And the combined noise kept us from enjoying our basement family room.
Each was too noisy to run under our bedrooms overnight, so we had to shove one to the center of the basement each night and shove it back in the mornings. We didn't dare turn either off since combined, they never could catch up. To be fair, I like the basement cooler than the units could dehumidify (although the box said they could). The Soleus has never had a problem with the cold. The other units heated the basement uncomfortably for me without dehumidifying it. The Soleus creates very little heat, especially for the dehumidification it provides.
We were about to install an expensive whole house air exchange system when we read about the Soleus and ordered one. We ran it first with one, then the other dehumidifier, at opposite ends of the basement.
The Soleus is whisper quiet so we can again enjoy our family room. Our electric bill dropped considerably and the main floor stopped being damp. Impressed by the efficiency and quietness, we ordered another Soleus and gave away our other brands. Our electric bill dropped even more and the basement finally dried out. Apparently, we only needed 1 unit and time for it to catch up. The 2 units dehumidified the house quickly and now we only run 1 centrally located in the basement which keeps the whole house comfortably dry. No more mold problems.
My only complaint is that when the electric power is interrupted, the Soleus turns off and stays off until someone turns it back on. I understand the newer models don't do this but wouldn't trade my model because it is supposed to be more efficient.
I love the ease of connecting a hose for drainage, and the ease of switching back to container use. Because I usually drain it through the hose, and because I have to be standing next to it to hear if it is running, a power "blink" sometimes shuts it off for a day or 2 but it quickly catches up once someone notices and turns it back on. If ever it doesn't, we have the 2nd unit to help out. We have never needed to use both since they originally dropped the humidity. We switch units periodically just to be sure each gets a chance to run.
This little unit saved us a lot of expense but more important to us, it eliminated the irritation of the noise of other brands. I would and do recommend it to anyone in need of a dehumidifier, especially before opting for more expensive, unnecessary humidity solutions as we almost did, and before wasting money on better known brands that didn't work well for us.
Thanks, Soleus, for a great product!
