Brand Loyalty

Usually when I buy an appliance or maybe some other household item, I develop some sort of brand loyalty once I realize how great the product is. Then, whenever I need to buy anything, I rely on other units by the same brand. Last year, I bought a powerful Delonghi space heater during the colder months. I loved my unit so much that I knew I had to get a portable air conditioner from the same brand during the summertime. Thankfully, I was not disappointed. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised because my portable air conditioner also came with a dehumidifier as well as a fan and air purifier! As a result, Delonghi helped me save money in more than one way.

How about you? Is there any brand you just can't live without?

Smaller, More Compact Appliances

When looking for certain household items, many people like to buy the biggest and the best, like with TVs and furniture. However, sometimes people need smaller, more compact units because there is a lack of space, or big units just look tacky in some homes. Additionally, college students and people with smaller apartments need smaller appliances to match with their other small appliances, such as mini-refrigerators and freezers. As a college student myself, I know just how true this is.

Luckily for these people (and me), there are many household appliances that are smaller in size. For example, many people prefer to use compact space heaters instead of large baseboard or garage heaters because they take up much less room, but at the same time they provide just enough (or more than enough) heat to keep you warm in the coldest of winters.

Similarly, most humidifiers come in smaller sizes to fit right onto your desktop or counter. The humidifiers from Crane are especially compact and lightweight, perfect for areas limited on space.

Air & Water's Here to Help!

As a kid, I always found visual details much more understandable and more appealing than regular details that are written or spoken. When doing arts and crafts, I found it much easier to learn how to make lanyards by watching someone else make it rather than by reading instructions on how to make this string go through that loop.

Even now, as an adult, I find it rather helpful to use visuals rather than text. And I know I can't be alone with this opinion - otherwise "How-to" videos on YouTube wouldn't be so popular! I tried learning how to curl my hair by reading a How-to article on WikiHow, but it just didn't help. As soon as I watched the video, however, I was able to pick it up fairly quickly (and not to mention a bunch of burn marks with it!).

So, to help you learn all you need to know about the benefits of a space heater, the results from using an air purifier, and even the different methods of venting portable air conditioners, Air & Water has been updating a page of How To Videos that you will probably find very useful when looking for that perfect appliance.

Electric Heaters Keep You Warm All Winter Long!

We all know that most people prefer electric heaters because they are easy to use and energy-efficient. However, there are actually many different types of electric heaters to choose from, and if you choose the wrong one, you can actually end up wasting more energy than you intend to!

Space heaters are great for supplemental heating in smaller areas such as bedrooms and small offices. They don't cost very much to purchase, and they use very little energy compared to larger or central heating systems. Many space heaters can effectively spot heat, or heat certain people or objects right in front of them. Electric wall heaters are also great for saving space and heating smaller areas. For offices, there are also heaters that you can use under your desk. These heaters include feet mats that are perfect for cold, rainy days. For more information about the different styles of space heaters, take a look at the post from two weeks ago.

Infrared heaters are one of the best ways to save energy and money during the colder months. They warm objects and people, not the air - therefore, you don't have to spend money paying for wasted warmth. However, because most infrared heaters emit a faint red light, they may not be suitable for use in bedrooms at night. These heaters are great for your health, as well! They promote blood circulation and healing, making you feel refreshed after every use.

Baseboard heaters use convection (heating without the use of a fan) to remove the cold air from your room. They can be mounted, or you can just set them on the floor (make sure to clear the airflow intake path to prevent energy waste). These heaters are extremely easy to maintain because they only require minor cleaning that involves removing dust from the grill. They are also very quiet and safe to use.

Garage heaters are great for heating up areas that central heating systems don't cover, such as garages and workshop areas. They are excellent spot heaters and are able to provide high output heat and large blasts of warm air. Garage heaters have the ability to warm areas from 150 to 560 square feet, depending on the size and model that you purchase. These heaters, like baseboard heaters, can also be mounted or just placed on the floor.

The Many Different Types of Space Heaters

There are many choices when it comes to efficient heating: space vs. garage heaters, electric vs. fuel heaters, and so on. Even when you choose to use an electric space heater, you are forced to choose between the different types of space heaters. Here's a run down of the 5 different types you can choose from:
  1. Fireplace heaters: These heaters are the next best type of warmth for those of you who want the beauty and aesthetics of a real wood-burning fireplace without having to worry about the mess it makes. They use 90% less energy than fuel heaters, and they only cost a few cents per hour to operate! To read more about fireplace heaters, take a look at one of our previous posts.
  2. Reflective or radiant heaters: These heaters only heat objects and people right in front of them, so they don't waste any energy when keeping you warm. Units like the NewAir AH-320E produce warmth that replicates the sun's rays for healthy heating!
  3. Oil-filled heaters: These radiator heaters heat up a reservoir of oil to keep you feeling warm in the coldest of winters. The oil never needs to be replaced or refilled, so maintanence is a breeze! Radiator heaters like the NewAir AH-450 space heater are excellent spot heaters that keep objects and people around them warm and comfortable.
  4. Ceramic heaters: This type of space heater is the most popular because a ceramic heater always stays cool and provides focused heating on areas that need it the most. Units like the Honeywell HZ-315 operate quietly and efficiently to bring warmth into areas with an insufficient heat source.
  5. Micathermic heaters: These heaters combine radiant and convection heating to provide safe heat. Micathermic heaters prevent energy loss by warming up almost immediately. Units like the Soleus HM2-15R-32 don't overheat easily while providing instantaneous warmth.

Get Ready for the Cold Weather!

Summer is coming to an end (fall 2009 begins a week from today!); over the next few months the weather is just going to get colder. Of course, with winter months comes the need for a heater. Like everything else, there are so many different types of heaters. How do you know which one to choose?

By Area
People usually buy their heating or cooling devices depending on how much area it covers. There are space heaters, which are for personal spaces and small rooms. The Vornado SoleAir is an example for a personal space heater: this unit keeps your body warm by heating up only your feet! Other Vornado heaters use vortex action technology to blend hold and cold air to maintain a comfortable, warm temperature.

Larger rooms usually use garage heaters because they can heat more space. With 19,000 BTUs, the QMark BRH562 easily warms up large areas in a short amount of time. Infrared heaters warm people and objects without affecting the air quality and temperature. Infrared units like the HGW-308R wall mounted micathermic heater by Soleus save energy and operate silently to provide maximum comfort.

By Design
Buying appliances for your home sometimes requires you to be picky. After all, you wouldn't want something hideous standing next to your wall for everyone to see. Some heaters are designed with specific aesthetic qualities to provide optimum heat and unique designs. Electric fireplace heaters are extremely popular when it comes to aesthetics. Dimplex, DeLonghi and NewAir provide electric stoves that look like real fireplaces but don't come with the terrible mess or smell of a real wood-burning fireplace. Deco Heat heaters are also very popular. Like the Deco Breeze fans, the Deco Heat heaters look great and operate with a lot less energy than most heaters. For example, the Deco Heat DHH0386 oscillating space heater has a beautiful mahogany finish, and it warms the room up almost instantly!

Stay Stylish and Warm

Space heaters are a great and efficient way to provide you with the heat that you need. Yet there does seem to be one major problem with space heaters, they tend to be major eye sores. They are usually designed to be placed in corners or under desks. The problem with this is that it often limits the amount of heat because of their placement. Luckily, Deco Breeze has created the Deco Heat line of low wattage space heaters. Each one is uniquely designed and offers a gorgeous finish that can compliment just about any room. They are light weight and made specifically to be placed just about anywhere. They camouflage their way into just about any room, allowing you enjoy a gentle, oscillating heat that works so well you quickly forget where the heat is coming from.

The Deco Heat DHH0385 Rococco Decorative Oscillating Space Heater

Unique and Stylish Design:
While each model in the Deco Heat line offers the same amount of power, safety features and options, the best benefit is that each Deco Heat model has a unique and gorgeous design that can fit any room perfectly. One of the most popular models is the DHH0385 Rococco. Rococco is a specific design that was made famous in 18th century France. It is extremely stylish and features a carved floral pattern that surrounds the entire heater.

Powerful and Petite:
The DHH0385 uses a heating filament with reflective metallic dish to provide gentle and relaxing heat. It is extremely energy efficient and has an expected life of 5,000 hours. There are two settings to provide you with heating options. Standard is great for more localized heating, while oscillating spreads the heat around to evenly warm the rest of the room. It operates extremely quietly and uses a low amount of energy to help keep your energy bill down.

This space heater is perfect for just about anywhere. Standing at 19 inches, this petite and lightweight heater is ideal for desk and table placement. The 8 inch diameter dish provides a surprisingly large amount of heat for such a small dish. Best of all this dish has adjustable tilt so that you can focus the heat exactly where you need it the most.

Very Safe:
This space heater is extremely safe. It boasts two safety features to keep you and your loved ones safe. The overheat protection stops power incase it begins to over heat. The tip-over safety switch is great as it will cut power incase it ever accidently gets knocked over.

Our Opinion:
The Deco Heat DHH0385 is a great all around low wattage space heater. It works perfectly and gives you the heat that you deserve. But in this reviewer’s opinion, the DHH0385 Rococc design works best for him as it adds a touch of class to just about any room. But feel free to find the Deco Heat style that fits your room the best.

A Truly Personal Heater

Personal space heaters have a tendency to not be so personal. They are often placed somewhere out of sight and have the tendency to be eye sores. Imagine if there was a personal heater you can curl up next too or rest your feet upon. Now that would be a personal heating experience. Vornado’s SoleAire Personal Space Heater and Foot Warmer is an extremely personal machine that will give you the warm fuzzy feeling inside and out.

The Vornado SoleAire

The Vordoa SoleAire is designed purely for your comfort. Its first function, is perhaps its most best function is its ability to be a foot warmer. Place your feel on the soft bumps and then correct your posture. This action provides a passive foot massage to help you relax. You will then notice that the 225 watt motor will begin to quickly provide 770 BTU’s of heat that will quickly expand over you entire body. Not only will you feel warm, but your body will breathe a sigh of relief as it quickly begins to relax and tension slips away. Best of all it does all this silently.

Designed to fit under you desk or by your chair the SoleAire is extremely space efficient and can work as a standard space heater or fan depending on what you need. The fan can cool effectively with its 3200 RPMs speed. There are plenty of included safety features to give you peace of mind. The SoleAire will shut it off incase of any kind of over heating thanks to the reset fuse, overheat protection and automatic shut-off feature. It also includes a one year manufacturer’s warranty in case of any unforeseen problems.

All in all, if you are looking for a great personal heater that you can really indulge yourself with, then there is nothing better then the Vornado SoleAire.

Big Heat Can Come in Small Packages

Space Heaters

When thinking about heaters, large bulky items often tend to come to mind. So what are your options when you need to heat smaller areas? Space heaters are a good solution to this problem. They use low amounts of energy and are often portable or wall mountable.

When purchasing space heaters it is important to look at electric ones to help avoid high prices and carbon monoxide poisoning. Space heaters have come a long way since the 1970s. Newer models use ceramic designs to eliminate potential threats of fires or burns. They also include safety features such as tip over safety switches and thermal cutoff switches to further decrease chances of a mishap.

Many space heaters now rely on convection heating. Convection heating is the heating of air in the immediate air next to the heater. As the air heats, it rises and then pushes the cold air down for that air to be heated until the air in your room or house is totally warm. Space heaters also tend to use radiant technology which is the heating of immediate objects until the room gets warm. They are very cost effective. Our staff has reviewed and tested numerous space heater and have posted a recommendation of an exemplary space heater.

What we recommend:

Vornado's new DVTH digital portable heater generates just the right amount of heat to meet your particular needs, in fact it was rated "BEST OVERALL" by Good Housekeeping. Vorndao heaters use vortex action technology to fully circulate the warm air silently within minutes. The DVTH has digital controls and uses automatic climate control to provide a continuous stream of heat without constant fluctuations. It adjusts the heat output and fan speed higher or lower at all times to maintain the set temperature to stop hot and cold cycles where the heater shuts off allowing the room to cool and then turns back on to heat the room up again.

The Vornado DVTH portable heater uses a top-mounted, easily accessible digital control panel that is simple to understand and operate. The LCD display tracks temperature and speed settings. There is variable heat output of 800 or 1500 watts that is housed by a contemporary design. Extremely energy-efficient this unit uses a cool-touch exterior and has triple safety features of tip-over and over-heat protection and an automatic safety shutoff. Even in use it is extremely cool to the touch exterior to provide worry-free use.
