Compact Refrigerators Save You Space

September is usually the month when students go back to school. Getting a compact refrigerator is oftentimes crucial for college students who spend most of their time studying and partying. Compact refrigerators are convenient and can help students eat healthier foods compared to the usual ramen or cup noodles. These smaller-sized refrigerators are also useful for people with small apartments or offices who don't have any extra room.

The Sunpentown RF-320W white compact refrigerator is a popular choice when it comes to apartments and college dorms. This compact refrigerator stands only 34 inches tall and features a separate compartment for a freezer! The wire shelves can slide out for convenience, and the freezer can actually reach an amazing 0° F! What makes this compact refrigerator stand out the most, of course, is the fact that it costs approximately $29 per year to operate. For those who have to pay a lot in electricity bills, this is a huge relief.

Some ice makers can also be used as compact refrigerators; these are a lot smaller and more compact. The NewAir AI-200SS portable ice maker is a great compact refrigerator that is only 16 inches long and 14 inches wide! Not only does this unit make ice, but it is also cold enough to function as a refrigerator. Unfortunately, this ice maker is not an ice freezer, so it can't store anything frozen for a long period of time.

Another compact refrigerator that can fit in small spaces is the extremely compact Sunpentown RF-400W refrigerator. This compact refrigerator, like the RF-320W, features a freezer and a refrigerator. However, this refrigerator features a little bit more cubic space (it has 4 cubic feet of space) for those who need a little more room. This compact refrigerator also comes with slide-out wire shelves, a transparent vegetable drawer with glass shelf, an ice cube tray and a can dispenser and tall bottle rack on the door! With an adjustable thermostat, you can even configure how cold you want the refrigerator to be. The RF-400W only costs about $31 per year and uses less than 1,000 watts per day!

If your home or office is running out of room, start using a compact refrigerator to save yourself some space, money and energy!

To get you ready to think about pet cooling, here are a few tips to prevent heat stroke in dogs:

Don't Leave Your Pet in a Locked Car

It's common sense that leaving a pet in a locked car on a 100 degree day is very dangerous. Not many people know that seemingly mild days can also be a great danger to your pet. Remember, cars heat up fast, even when the windows are cracked.

Jogging

You may think that jogging during the summer with your dog is okay because they jog everyday and are in great shape, but your routine may need to be altered during the warmer months. Humans can alter the amount of clothing they wear and produce more sweat as temperatures rise. Dogs still have the same amount of hair and only sweat a small amount through their foot pads. It's better to jog during the early mornings or late evenings.

Housing

Does your dog stay outdoors for the most part? If so, doggie needs shade and fresh water access at all times. If you are living in a warm climate, it's good to hose your dog down often as well to provide extra cooling.

Signs of Heat Stroke

- A body temperature of 104-110 degrees – Excessive panting – Dark or bright red tongue and gums – Staggering – Stupor – Seizures – Bloody diarrhea – Vomiting – Coma – Death

Dogs with an Increased Risk of Heat Stroke

- Brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs and pugs)

- Large heavy-coated breeds

- Dogs with heart or respiratory problems

If You Suspect that Your Dog Has Heat Stroke

- Seek veterinary attention immediately

- Use cool water (not ice water) to cool pet

- Do not aid cooling below 103 degrees (it is possible for dogs to be too cool)

- Offer ice cubes for your dog to lick

- Even if your pet seems okay, still bring to the vet. Internal organs are affected by excess heat and a complex blood problem can be a secondary complication to heat stroke

Like Things Compact? Try the NewAir AF-310 Evaporative Tower Cooling Fan!

The ‘80s seemed to be the decade of excess in America: big hair, big beats and big shoulder pads. During the ‘90s, society moved away from all things big little by little. Big hair seemed passé, stripped down music was in-vogue and slimmed-down lines graced the runways. The goal nowadays is to be as compact as possible. This goal is far reaching, spanning into almost every segment of society. I was making an introduction for a video series and asked my colleague for a critique. He liked the style but had one complaint: it was too long. Keep in mind that this introduction was a mere 20-25 seconds long. Some other examples of the obsession with compactness are:

News and Information: I was listening to the radio this morning and someone was mentioning how they like to use Wikipedia to gather information because, “everything is in one place.” Wikipedia converts a large amount of information into an easy-to-read summary. It is constantly being updated and is even split into clever subcategories on more complicated subjects. I’ve also noticed that morning, midday and evening newscasts are starting to cycle their news stories even more quickly than before. I’ll hear the same three to four news stories every 7-8 minutes. I guess they figure that the attention spans of their viewers are that short.

Technology: Have you ever seen that Saturday Night Live sketch that features Will Ferrell with a minuscule cell phone? It may have lost some of its comedic bite over the years because that really it the direction in which cell phones are moving. Apple’s iPods seem to be moving in that direction as well with the introduction of the iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and iPod Mini. Oh, and a discussion of miniature gadgets would not be complete without a mention of the MacBook Air, the world’s thinnest and lightest laptop.

Social Networking: The whole social networking phenomenon really blew up with the widespread use of MySpace and Facebook. Both of these websites pare a whole person’s personality into a profile page. Micro-blogging recently gained popularity with Twitter as the front runner. It minimizes a person’s day-to-day experiences into a series of updates limited to 140 characters.

Body Image: There was a time not so long ago when celebrities with womanly curves such as Jennifer Lopez and Salma Hayek were celebrated. As of late, the trend of envied celebrity body-types lean toward paper-thin role models. For example Lindsay Lohan, an incredibly svelte starlet, is being forced to gain weight for her next movie role. Producers want her to look like a “normal, healthy girl.” This directly affects young women, influencing their opinions of what makes them attractive in society's eyes. As of this moment, the thinner, the better.

To abate the extreme hunger for compactness, NewAir has introduced the AF-310 Evaporative Tower Cooling Fan. This unit is incredibly compact, making it fit in perfectly with all of your other condensed and concise items. As well as being slim enough to operate from any area in your home, the NewAir AF-310 Evaporative Tower Cooling Fan also features a 4-in-1 design, a built-in ionizer, easy-to-use controls and oscillating louvers.

I hope this is not too long for this compact world!

Vacuum Cleaner Review: The Eureka 4870HZ Boss SmartVac Upright Vacuum Cleaner

I recently discovered that I have allergies. I’ve probably had them for my entire life but I just figured out why I always seem to get sick around the fall and the spring. As a direct result of this discovery, I have decided that I need to vacuum way more often. I tend to let dust collect for a longer time than any other human being would deem adequate. This means my search for a powerful vacuum that also eliminates allergens is on. Here is my review of the best vacuum cleaner I've found for my needs.

Different vacuum cleaners have different sizes and shapes. As well as being shaped and sized differently, they are all suited for different specific tasks. Upright vacuums are especially adept at cleaning wall-to-wall carpeting and capture and hold more dirt and debris than canister vacuum cleaners. They are also outfitted with more powerful motors and can be set to use a beater head for carpets and static suction for bare floors. The Eureka 4870HZ Boss SmartVac Upright Vacuum Cleaner comes with a variety of specialized features that help you clean your home thoroughly. These advanced features include:

Easy Storage:

Cord retainer- For easy power cord storage.

Hose Retainers- The hose is incredibly easy to store.

Tool Storage- All of the tools can easily be stored on board. They can be accessed whenever needed.

Easy Maintenance:

Bag Cover Latch- Change the disposable dust bag with ease.

HEPA Filter Door Latch- Easy access to the HEPA filter so it can be changed if needed.

Easy Operation:

Handle Release- Pull the handle back as far as you need for a comfortable cleaning position.

Stair Handle- Cleaning stairs is simple with the convenient feature.

Brush Roll Control- The brushroll can be turned off or on at the flip of a switch so that you can clean bare floors or carpeting.

Headlight- Cleaning in dark crevices and corners is easily handled.

Carrying Handle- Portability is increased considerably by the convenient carrying handle.

Specialized Features:

Adjustable Height Setting- The cleaner height can be raised or lowered to correctly clean whatever type of floor surface. For effective cleaning, the brush roll must reach the carpet.

Thermal Cutoff- In case the vacuum cleaner ever overheats, this feature will automatically turn it off for your safety.

Turbo Nozzle- A power paw with riser visor eliminates dust, dirt and pet hair from upholstery backs and stair risers.

Sealed HEPA Filter- 99.97% of dust, allergens and pet dander are captured by this filtration system. All particulates are sealed inside of the vacuum cleaner, keeping your home allergen-free.

Comfortable Oval Handle- This vacuum is easily maneuvered and easy to clean with.

Suction Control Switch- For optimum power while cleaning, a suction control switch can direct suction power to the area you need it most: the hose or the floor.

The NewAir AC-10000E Portable Air Conditioner: My Biggest College Regret

I really miss college. It was a time in my life where every minute and every task was leading up to a specific goal. The one thing that really cheesed me off when I left college, though, was all the things that were brought to my college after I graduated. For instance, a very convenient trolley that was inexpensive and carried students directly from the campus to the train station was opened about a month after I left college. Also, a state-of-the-art student center was opened the semester after I graduated. Any friends who were still attending my university were quick to tell me, "the center is awesome" and "too bad you already graduated." One of the other things that I did not have the pleasure of using while I was I college is the Amazon Kindle. If you are unfamiliar with the Kindle, it is a wireless reading device that can hold over 1,500 books. This would have been so helpful in college, considering I was a creative writing major and reading books was a significant portion of my academic program. I guess I can't really blame technology for improving, but is it my fault I was born a couple of years too early?

One innovation I really could have used in my college dorm or my college apartment is the NewAir AC-10000E Portable Air Conditioner. Portable air conditioners are great for smaller areas like dorm rooms or apartments because they offer quick, efficient cooling without sacrificing precious living space. Here are the features the NewAir AC-10000E offers that could have made my college years in a hot, dry climate a lot more comfortable:

Sleek Design: My dorm room wouldn't allow window air conditioners and sometimes my roommates and I couldn't agree on a standard apartment temperature. This portable ac would have kept my comfortable without breaking any rules or causing discomfort to others. It is also very light, making it easy to move from room to room.

Self Evaporative Technology: As a busy college student, I was too occupied with studying (or partying) to have to empty a water bucket. The AC-10000E features self-evaporative technology that removes collected moisture by evaporating it into the exhausted air.

Powerful Cooling: My whole dorm room and my entire room in my apartment would have been kept comfortably cool by the 10,000 verified BTUs of cooling power.

Built-In Timer: Money as well as time was tight back then, so the built-in 12 hour programmable timer that allowed you to set the length of operation would have been extremely beneficial. It saves time and reduces energy consumption.

Filters Indoor Air: Once I entered college I noticed that during the spring semester every year, my nose would start running, my eyes would start watering and my throat was extremely irritated. This was the beginning of my seasonal allergies. The NewAir AC-10000E portable air conditioner features a bonus air filter that removes airborne contaminants such as dust and dander which really helps allergy sufferers like me.

Great Value: I worked at the campus library for about 10 hours a week, so I was hardly raking in the dough. That would have been no problem because this unit is very affordable. It also saves you money because it can work as an air conditioner, dehumidifier, fan and air filter.

Window Air Conditioners: Cool Small Spaces Effectively and Economically

When only a single room needs to be cooled rather than an entire home or business, a window air conditioner is a more economical choice than central air conditioning. The initial costs are less expensive and they cost less to operate over time. These appliances sit in a window so that warm air can be exhausted to the outside. They do not need to be permanently installed, so during the winter they can be stored to prevent drafts. Some window air conditioners can be built into the wall for a more permanent installation as well.

The important thing to take note of when choosing a window air conditioner is the cooling capacity. Cooling capacity is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) per hour. If you purchase an ac without enough BTUs, it will run continuously without cooling the room effectively. If the window ac has too many BTUs, the room will be cooled too quickly and the unit won’t remove as much humidity from the air as it should. It will turn off and on repeatedly and the room will feel damp, clammy and uncomfortable. Also, if the unit has a cooling capacity that is too large it will cost more and use more energy. A properly sized unit removes humidity effectively as it cools.

To purchase a window air conditioner that has the correct cooling capacity you should follow a few simple steps. First you’ll need to measure the space that needs to be cooled. You can estimate the square footage that needs to be cooled by multiplying the length of the room by the width. Here is a chart that presents the recommended BTUs for the amount of space to be cooled:

Square FootageAmount of BTUs Needed
100 to 1505,000
150 to 2506,000
250 to 300 7,000
300 to 3508,000
350 to 4009,000
400 to 45010,000
450 to 55012,000
550 to 70014,000
700 to 1,00018,000
1,000 to 1,40024,000

Some helpful hints for choosing the correct cooling capacity include:

-Reduce BTU capacity by 10 % if the room is heavily shaded.

-Increase the BTU capacity by 10% if the room is very sunny.

-Add 600 BTUs per person if more than 2 people regularly occupy the room.

-Increase the capacity by 4,000 BTUs if the window air conditioner is for a kitchen.

Another important factor to include in your window ac decision is the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio). This figure approximates the unit’s operating cost as compared to similar models. The higher the value of the EER, the less it will cost to operate. If possible, try to choose an Energy Star rated window ac. These units have high efficiency compressors, fan motors and heat transfer surfaces. The amount of energy required to compress the refrigerant is reduced. They exceed the minimum federal standards for energy consumption by at least 15%.

Some important features to look out for are an energy saving feature, 3 speed fan controls, digital thermostats, an adjustable timer and an easy slide-out filter. The energy saving feature cycles the compressor off and on so that it doesn’t operate continuously and operating costs are reduced. 3 speed fan controls allow the adjustment of the amount of cool air (and noise) the window ac produces. Digital thermostats keep your unit precise and easy to use. A timer allows the window air conditioner to come on when you desire so it isn’t controlled by the temperature of the room only. Finally, most air conditioners have filters that need to be cleaned periodically, so choose one with a filter that easily slides out. Keeping the filter clean save money and energy.

Vacuum Cleaner Buying Guide: Styles for Every Situation

Sometimes it is difficult to choose a vacuum cleaner. For every use there is a different choice. Many modern vacuum cleaners can be used for a variety of cleaning tasks besides simply removing dirt and dust from carpets and rugs. Choosing the appropriate vacuum cleaner for your specific needs enhances and prolongs the improved appearance of your flooring and makes cleaning much easier.

Uprights are the most common type of vacuum cleaner. If you need to clean large, clear surfaces these vacuums are excellent. They often come with a number of different features that help you do more than just vacuum. These features help you keep your hard flooring and upholstery looking great as well as help you clean your carpeting more thoroughly. One of the great debates when it comes to upright vacuum cleaners is whether to purchased one that uses bags or is bagless. Bagged uprights will require periodic bag changes. You will need to take not of the bag style to replace them in the future. Dust and debris collects in a receptacle instead of a bag on bagless units. This receptacle will need to be emptied regularly. Sometimes dirt and dust can be released back into the air when the receptacle is being emptied. Also, units that are bagless often utilize filters that will need to be replaced periodically. Uprights also usually include various attachments and features that provide a more complete cleaning experience such as crevice tools, dusting brushes, headlights and full bag indicators.

Another common type of vacuum cleaner is a canister vacuum cleaner. Canisters are often lighter than uprights so they offer greater maneuverability. This makes them useful for hard-to-reach areas such as underneath furniture and stairs. Hard surfaces are easier to clean with canister vacuums as well. Some canisters even have all surface designs that make them ideal for carpets and bare flooring. If you suffer from an allergy or respiratory disorder, it is also important to look at filtration methods. The best filter for these specific needs is a HEPA filter. HEPA filters use a sealed system and retain 99.97% of particulates at 0.3 microns. Canister vacuum cleaners also can have specialized tools to handle furniture or drapes and long cords and hoses for cleaning large living spaces.

It can be inconvenient to pull out a full-sized upright or canister vacuum cleaner when an unexpected spill occurs. For quick spills, car interiors and hard-to-reach areas, handheld vacuum cleaners are ideal because they are portable, lightweight and easy to maneuver. Handheld vacuum cleaners can have cords or be cordless, which is more versatile and convenient. There is no need to purchase and replace dust bags with most handheld vacuum cleaners because they are often bagless. The dirt cup simply needs to be emptied every so often. To make handheld vacuums clean as thoroughly as their full sized counterparts they often have special attachments and features included such as motorized brushes and HEPA filters.

Stick vacuum cleaners are useful for when regular sized vacuum cleaners are too heavy and ineffective for surfaces that aren't carpeted. These convenient and lightweight vacuum cleaners are best for vacuuming carpets and hard floors lightly. Dealing with quick cleanups in the kitchen, bathroom or family rooms is this vacuum's specialty. They can clean underneath beds, tables and furniture with their low profile bodies. Stick vacuum cleaners are versatile, inexpensive and include many of the same attachments as upright vacuums. Their long and lean construction makes them easy to store and they are great for smaller living quarters. They usually weight between 2 and 7 pounds and are often bagless.

One last category of vacuums is personal carpet shampooers. They are indispensable to pet owners because they easily kill stains and spills. Carpet shampooers clean deep seated dirt and embedded particles which eliminates any diseases and dangerous allergens that can be present in the carpeting. Also, shampooing at least twice a year extends your carpet's life.

Electric Fans: Ways to Prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden death of an infant under one year of age. It isn't any one illness or disease, but a diagnosis that's given when a child under a year old dies suddenly and an exact cause can't be found after a complete medical and legal investigation. The complete investigation includes an autopsy, examination of the death scene, and a review of the symptoms or illnesses the infant had prior to dying including any other pertinent medical history. SIDS is very devastating for families because it can happen without warning.

SIDS most commonly occurs during cold weather months to infants between the ages of 2-4 months, with 90 percent of cases in infants under 6 months. This syndrome kills about 2,500 infants annually in the United States and is the leading cause of death for babies between 1 month and 1 year old. SIDS is also known as crib death because it happens mostly during sleep and between the hours of 10 p.m. and 10 a.m. SIDS does not only occur at night, though. 20 percent of SIDS deaths happen in childcare settings. The incidence of SIDS has decreased dramatically in recent years. There is no 100 percent way to prevent SIDS but there are steps you can take to reduce an infant's risk of SIDS.

The Back to Sleep campaign informs parents to put their infants to sleep on their backs and not on their sides or stomachs. An infant's risk of SIDS has been found to be 1.7 to 12.9 percent higher if sleeping on the stomach instead of the back. Betty McEntire, the executive director of the American SIDS Institute, warns believes that when a baby sleeps on the stomach, overheating is more likely, pauses in breathing can happen and the baby can re-breathe the air he has just exhaled, which can raise carbon dioxide levels. Also, if a baby is used to sleeping on his back and is placed to sleep on his tummy, studies have shown that the risk of SIDS rises significantly. It is not safe for a baby to sleep on his/her side either because it can roll over onto the stomach. The baby should never be put on a waterbed, bean bag or soft blanket alone. Never uses a soft blanket that can cover his face and cause choking. It is important to make sure daycare personnel and babysitters know these safety procedures as well.

Another risk factor for SIDS is thermal stress or being overheated. An infant should always be provided a comfortable room temperature that isn't too warm or hot. Excessive bedclothes, covering the head and too much bundling should all be avoided. Exposure to second hand smoke is also a risk factor. It is probably not enough to just smoke outside of the house, either. Of course, smoking during pregnancy should be avoided as well because it is another risk factor for SIDS.

A study published in 2007 recognizes a connection between hearing ability and SIDS. A pediatric anesthesiologist named Daniel D. Rubens at Seattle Children's Hospital analyzed the results of newborn hearing tests. He found that babies who were struck by SIDS had consistently tested lower on the inner ear function of the right ear than babies who didn't die of SIDS. Healthy infants usually test stronger in the right ear than the left. The results of this study suggest that there are new areas of research and possible identifying factors for babies that are at a higher risk for SIDS.

There was another study that found that the use of electric fans in a baby's nursery decreases the risk of SIDS. The Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Ca studied 185 babies who died from SIDS in 11 California counties between May 1, 1997 and April 30, 2000 in comparison to 312 normal infants from similar socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds living in the same counties. The mothers were asked several questions about fan use, pacifier use, room location, sleep surface, the type of covers over the baby, bedding under the infant, room temperature and whether a window was open. It was found that using a fan cut the risk of SIDS by 72 percent. Using a fan in a room with a temperature higher than 69 degrees Fahrenheit is associated with a decreased risk of SIDS compared with no fan use.

Upright Vacuum Cleaner Buying Guide

Upright vacuum cleaners are vacuums that are composed of a cleaning head with a handle and bag attached. The motor, bag, hose and beater are usually all included in a single unit. Their wheeled carriages make them easy to maneuver around furniture. Some are even self-propelled so that they can cover large, open areas of a room. Upright vacuum cleaners work best on carpeting. Adjustment settings are sometimes available for carpets of different heights most have a bare floor setting. Upright vacuum cleaners provide a wide cleaning swath, is great at deep cleaning carpets, easy to store and have great suction.

Choosing a vacuum cleaner is an important and sometimes expensive decision. Before buying an upright vacuum cleaner it is important to consider a few key factors:

Filter: Consider any special filtration needs. High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters have excellent filtration properties, that's why they are included on models like the Hoover U6634900 Self-Propelled WindTunnel Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner. They remove at lease 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers in diameter. Particles of this size are the most difficult to filter and are considered the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). HEPA filters are beneficial for asthma and allergy sufferers. They trap fine particles such as pollen and dust mite feces which trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. Keep in mind that for a HEPA filter to be effective, the vacuum must be designed so that all of the air drawn into the machine is expelled through the filter so that none of the air leaks past it.

Bags vs. Bagless: Although most upright vacuum cleaners come with disposable bags to collect dust and dirt, more bagless models are being designed every day. Bagless models have a cylinder that collects dust and is emptied after vacuuming, like the Bissell 37604 Lift-Off Revolution Pet Bagless Vacuum Cleaner. With bagless upright vacuum cleaners there is no need to purchase bags and are easy to empty. Bagged models are cheaper and retain good suction longer. You’ll simply replace the bag when full. With bagless models, dirt and dust can be released into the air.

Tools and Attachments: Figure out what you will be cleaning the most and what attachments you'll need to help. Are you going to be cleaning drapes, furniture and stairs? Will you be switching from hardwood to rugs and carpeting? Both of these situations may call for specialized tools and brushes.

Maneuverability and Cleaning Benefits: If you need to clean bare floors as well as your carpeting and rugs, consider purchasing a unit that has a revolving brushroll that can be turned off, like the Eureka 4870PZ Boss SmartVac Upright Vacuum Cleaner. This ensures that your hard flooring will not be damaged. Long cords and long hose are great for cleaning large areas without having to plug into a different outlet. The hose makes it easy to clean high places with an attachment without worrying about the vacuum cleaner tipping over. If you want to vacuum underneath beds and other furniture, you'll need an upright with a low profile. One other helpful feature is edge cleaning. If a vacuum features edge cleaning, it means that it can pick up dirt under the entire areas of the cleaning head. This is most useful when cleaning wall-to-wall carpeting.

Having a Summer Party? Make Perfect Iced Drinks with the NewAir AI-210SS Portable Icemaker!

Summer's here, and there’s no better time to celebrate the warmer months with cool cocktails in the comfort of your home. Whether you're having an after-work happy hour or a weekend soiree, serving perfectly chilled cocktails will definitely let you toast to a season of fun.

When planning a summer cocktail party, keep in mind that drinks are often the most important focal points. Don’t just serve wine or beer; consider the base of the drinks you’re going to serve, and don’t limit yourself to single spirit drinks. For example, it’s always a good idea to have a rum-based drink, vodka-based drink, and of course, a fruity, frozen summer concoction.

With that in mind, cool drinks require ice, and this is especially important in on-the-rocks beverages, as ice is a major factor in constructing the perfect Tom Collins or Whiskey Sour. The best quality and tasting ice either makes or breaks a great drink, and cubes should be shaped in such a way that it does not take up much surface area because this prevents the drink from “watering down.”

Therefore, if you’re throwing a summer cocktail party, don’t forget to have ample amounts of ice. While your refrigerator’s icemaker can provide enough ice for a few glasses of water or ice tea, you may have to seek other methods of obtaining larger amounts of ice. Many people purchase ice from the supermarket or even from ice companies. These companies use state-of-the-art ice making equipment with a reverse-osmosis purification process, and the resulting ice is bagged and made available to customers.

This type of ice most often comes in the form of dry ice, glacier block ice, and cubed ice. Dry ice is carbon dioxide in a frozen state and is ideal for keeping perishables frozen for long periods of time. Because dry ice doesn’t melt into water but turns into a gas, they are not used directly in beverages. Glacier block ice comes in large blocks and perfect for camping on ice chests. Cubed ice, on the other hand, is what most people use in their drinks, and these can be purchased in various sized bags and quantities.

However, if you don’t want to deal with the issue of buying cubed ice from an ice company, a portable ice maker may be just the solution. These types of units are compact, good for countertop placement, and usually produce ice in minutes without needing to be directly connected to a water line. Instead, bottled or tap water can be poured directly into the icemaker. Furthermore, many portable ice makers can produce ice in different sizes and cube shapes.

Our product team has spent the majority of the summer months testing and reviewing some of the most popular portable ice makers on the market today. Well-known icemaker manufacturers include Franklin Chef, Amcor, Avanti, and Sunpentown, but when NewAir, a company primarily known for its air conditioners and heaters, offered to supply us with their NewAir AI-210SS portable ice maker to try, we were excited to see how it measured up in terms of features when compared to competing units. Here’s what we found:

Design:
When we received the AI-210SS icemaker, we really liked its sleek and stylish design. It featured a silver body with black accents that looked great sitting on our kitchen counter. Although it weighed approximately 46 pounds, we could tell it was constructed of heavy duty materials and built to last. This 115 volt icemaker easily plugged into a household outlet, and the front door was easy to open and close. Also included was a removable bin and ice scoop. The LCD screen was bright and easy to read, and we were able to have the unit up and running after just a few minutes. We also appreciated the fact that it even had a “Self-Clean” function.

Ice Making Capabilities:
According to NewAir, the AI-210SS portable ice maker produces ice in as little as six minutes, and we found this to be true. Twelve pieces of ice per cycle were made in our choice of three different sizes (small, medium, and large), and instead of having to deal with a water line, we simply poured bottled water into the reservoir. In terms of maintenance, when we were done using the AI-210SS, we simply emptied the unused water via the side mounted drain.

Overall Thoughts:
Overall, we feel the NewAir AI-210SS is the best choice for homeowners that need a compact ice maker. It makes a large amount of ice in a short amount of time and is actually more affordable than other units with similar ice making abilities.

Get Ice in Minutes with the Sleek and Stylish NewAir AI-200SS Portable Ice Maker!

Summer is already here, and besides sitting in an air conditioned room or in front of a fan at full blast, blistering days are usually tamed by icy chilled drinks. Our refrigerator ice makers can be one of our best friends in the sweltering summer, but like many home appliances, freezer ice makers are prone to malfunctions. Problems can arise from plugged water filters, kinks in the water line, or even expanding/contracting coils, and when such issues occur, we’re usually forced to run to the supermarket to fetch heavy bags of ice. This scenario is especially frustrating during a party or gathering. Thankfully, home ice makers can solve this problem.

Most restaurants use huge commercial-sized ice makers that produce hundreds of pounds of ice per day, but this isn't necessary if you simply want to enjoy a cold drink or need to fill an ice cooler. Instead, a portable countertop ice maker can do the job. Portable ice makers are nothing like commercial icemakers because they’re compact, easy to use, and usually don’t require permanent installation or any type of direct line connection. Water is simply poured into the unit’s tank and ice is made within minutes.

With that in mind, there are several different portable icemaker manufacturers on the market today, and some of the most popular brands are Amcor and Franklin Chef. Our product team has been busy testing some of the newest portable icemakers on the market, and we recently came across the NewAir AI-200SS countertop icemaker.

Perfect for home, RV, or boats; and ideal for parties and get-togethers, the NewAir AI-200SS is affordable and boasts a handful of advanced features as well. Here is what we especially liked about this value-priced portable ice maker:

Design and Style:
The first thing we noticed about the AI-200SS ice maker was its appearance. Constructed of heavy-duty stainless steel, this unit was sleek, stylish, and looked great in our kitchen. Although it weighed about 46 pounds, its unique cubic shape made it idea for countertop use. We liked the fact that it only required a standard household outlet and did not need to be continually drained or hooked up to a direct water line. Instead, we simply filled the water reservoir with one gallon of bottled water, placed the ice basket back into the unit, and closed the cover. Furthermore, the soft touch controls made the AI-200SS incredibly easy to operate.

Ice Making Abilities:
After filling up the water tank, we were now ready to have a constant and ample supply of ice. Ice was produced in only 10 minutes (12 pieces per cycle), and we were even able to select from three ice cube sizes: large, medium, and small. Each ice making cycle lasted anywhere from 7 to 13 minutes, depending on the ice cube size, and the internal bin was able to hold 2.5 pounds of ice at a time. Over the course of one day, we were able to get approximately 35 pounds of ice from the AI-200SS.

Overall, we really enjoyed the NewAir AI-200SS portable ice maker. In fact, once we began to use it, we wondered how we ever got along without it. Also, at under $250, it was definitely more affordable (and effective) than some of the other models we tested.

Making Ice Has Never Been Easier with the NewAir AI-100S Portable Ice Maker!

Ice plays an important role in a great cocktail, but is one of the most overlooked ingredients. First and foremost, ice cools down the drink during the mixing process. This process is important because when the temperature of a cocktail is lowered, the taste receptors in the tongue are inhibited. Thus, the drink becomes more palatable and less “alcoholic” tasting. In fact, according to a recent Los Angeles Times article, Christian Frizzell, co-owner of Redwood Bar and Grill in Los Angeles, states, “So long it's all been about mixology or infusion of liquor for flavor. But a perfect pour is not just about adding a bunch of stuff. It's got to be the perfect temperature." Furthermore, ice is such an important subject to bartenders that every year during the Tales of the Cocktail mixologist’s convention, there is a seminar on “The Importance of Ice” which discusses this very subject.

Some bartenders take the issue of ice to the extreme. Many bartenders working in upscale bars in metropolitan cities such as Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago may use bottled or triple distilled artisan water such as Fiji to make their ice, while others make ice in large blocks and hand crack it with a hammer and ice saw. This results in cubes that are larger than crushed ice and perfect for drinks on the rocks.

NewAir AI-100S Portable Ice Maker
However, if you’re just a casual home bartender, you may not want to resort to hacking away at a huge block of ice with a pick just yet. To ensure great tasting ice (and sufficient amounts of it) at all times, a portable ice maker will do just fine. As such, with summer already here, our product team thought it would be the perfect time to test out some of the finest portable ice makers on the market today. Some of the leading brands we found were Franklin Chef and Sunpentown, but NewAir, a company better known for its line of cooling and heating products, also has a line of excellent home ice makers that are quite affordable.

Whether you use cubed ice, ice nuggets, chopped, or crushed ice, a portable home ice maker such as the NewAir AI-100S is a great choice for the seasoned mixologist or home bartender. Perfect for those who entertain often, this portable icemaker combines style and convenience in one unit. With the ability to produce up to 28 pounds of ice in a 24-hour period, this icemaker ensures that you have a steady ice supply when entertaining large groups of people. For this week, we were fortunate enough to be able to test the NewAir AI-100S compact portable ice maker, and here were our findings:

First Impressions of the AI-100S
When we received the unit, we were amazed at how compact it was. It weighed approximately 34 pounds and featured a sleek silver case that complemented our test kitchen. Furthermore, we appreciated the fact that unlike larger industrial-sized ice makers, the NewAir AI-100S fit nicely on our countertop next to our toaster. The AI-100S connected to a standard household power outlet and best of all, permanent installation was not required. Instead, the unit could be used with either tap or bottled water. In fact, we used Fiji artisan water (just like many top bartenders) in the AI-100S for our Glen Livet on the rocks, and we could definitely taste the difference.

Performance
In terms of ice production, we were impressed that ice was made within 15 minutes of turning the machine on, and we were able to choose from three ice sizes – small, medium, or large, with nine pieces of ice produced per cycle. Also, NewAir claimed this unit could make up to 28 pounds of ice per day, and we did find this to be true. Maintenance was also a breeze: the side mounted drain allowed us to empty the unit directly into the sink, and all we had to do was clean the inside tank with mild soap and water after we were done.

Overall, we really enjoyed using the NewAir AI-100S. At less than $200, it’s definitely more affordable than some of big-name models out there, but offers the same great features and then some.

Eliminate Excess Moisture with the NewAir AD-400 Dehumidifier

Dry indoor air can contribute to cracked and warped furniture; dry throat and skin; and static shocks. On the other hand, excess moisture levels can also result in a range of problems. Besides causing discomfort to occupants, excess moisture levels in a building can damage furnishings; promote mildew and mold growth; and even exacerbate asthma, allergy, and other respiratory symptoms. While dry air can be remedied by a simple humidifier or vaporizer, humid air is a bit more complex. There are many indications of excess moisture in the air such as the following:

1. Damp spots on the inner surfaces of exterior walls or even ceilings
2. Mold or mildew growth on ceilings or walls
3. Frost, condensation, or ice on inside window surfaces
4. Frost or ice on the underside of roof sheathing in attic spaces
5. Blistering of paint
6. Sweating water pipes
7. Condensation on basement walls and pipes

The moisture content of the air is often stated in terms of relative humidity, or the amount of moisture the air can hold at that temperature. Thus, if your home has 50% relative humidity, this means that the air is holding half the amount of water it could hold at that temperature. As the given quantity of air is cooled, in turn, the relative humidity of the air will increase. If air is sufficiently cooled, 100 percent relative humidity will be reached and the air will be saturated. Most experts note that indoor humidity levels should ideally be between 40-50%, and to maintain this range, a dehumidifier is the way to go.

When shopping for a dehumidifier, there are a few features to look for, primarily an automatic shut-off function that turns off the unit when the container is full; a signal light that alerts you when the container is full; and even a humidistat that will allow you to set the humidity level to your individual preferences.

That said, with summer already here, those living in both hot and humid climates will definitely need to find a way to address moisture levels, and our product team felt that reviewing a few dehumidifiers would be appropriate. There are several established dehumidifier brands out there, specifically Eva-Dry, Soleus, and Amcor. However, NewAir, a company best known for its selection of portable air conditioners, has just introduced their latest product offering: the NewAir AD-400 dehumidifier. We were lucky enough to test this product in our office, and here’s what we found:

First Impressions:
Other dehumidifiers we’ve seen are generally bulky and unattractive, but the NewAir AD-400 was definitely different. It weighed only 25 pounds, featured a stylish silver body with white accents, and a vertical design that it made it perfect for tight spaces. Heavy-duty rolling casters made it easy to move the unit from room to room, while the carrying handle was also a nice touch. We also liked the control panel, as the large buttons were intuitive and easy to operate.

Dehumidification:
One of the drawbacks found in several portable dehumidifiers is a small capacity water tank. Therefore, assuming the unit can accommodate a direct drainage hose, a dehumidifier with a small tank will need to be continuously drained if you don’t want to be frequently emptying the reservoir. However, we found that the NewAir AD-400 had a dehumidification capacity of 40 pints per day and could be drained continuously. Also, it utilized refrigeration technology – just like an air conditioner – in order to remove excess moisture from the air. Furthermore, the AD-400 included an automatic shut-off function and a full tank indicator.

Built-In Humidistat:
Dehumidifiers with built-in humidistats are great because they allow you to select the desired humidity level for your room, but not every unit has this feature. Thankfully, the NewAir AD-400 had a humidistat for this purpose.

Low Temperature Operation and Automatic Defrost:
In especially low temperatures, a dehumidifier’s tank can freeze over and cycle off. The NewAir AD-400 dehumidifier could operate in rooms where the temperature ranged from 41° F and 53.6° F and it automatically defrosted every 30 minutes.

Air Cleaning:
To address indoor air quality problems, the NewAir AD-400 came equipped with a built-in ionizer for particulates and an activated carbon filter to adsorb odors.

Although some experts may say that all dehumidifiers perform equally, we disagree. Overall, we were definitely impressed with the NewAir AD-400 dehumidifier because of its great features and advanced design.

NewAir AW-211ED Wine Cooler Combines Form and Function in One Unit!

Most people know two facts about wine: that certain wines must be aged to achieve peak quality and that wine must be stored at the correct manner in order to maintain and fully enjoy its aroma and bouquet. However, few can actually understand the science behind wine aging and thus underestimate the importance of proper storage techniques.

Because wine is a complex balance of amino acids, phenols, carbohydrates, and other chemical compounds, chemical reactions between these compounds can be affected by environmental changes. Seeing as the speed of a chemical reaction increases with temperatures, wine will hardly age if stored at or below 50°F. However, once a bottle of wine is stored at room temperature, years of aging will be accelerated in just months or even weeks. As such, one could say that temperature stability is the mainstay of wine storage.

For the most part, most wines available today are of the “ready-to-drink” variety, but these can be safely stored for a few years by following these conditions:

- Away from sunlight
- At temperatures between 40° F and 65°F, depending on the type of wine
- Humidity levels greater than 50%

If wine is stored outside of these limits, it will be subject to spoilage or premature aging. With that said, proper wine storage is imperative. While the first two of the above conditions can be easily met by the average wine drinker, the last one should be met with some type of cellar, wine cabinet, or wine cooler. Most people don’t have the luxury of building home cellars, so that’s when a wine cooler comes in.

There are many different models and types of wine coolers available, but when choosing one that will best suit your needs, first determine how many bottles you will be chilling at once, then add more capacity to allow for a growing collection. Secondly, figure out what types of wine you will be storing. If you only drink Chardonnay, a wine cooler with a single temperature zone will do. However, if you enjoy both reds and whites, you’ll need a wine refrigerator with at least 2 zones.

With that said, our product team has been busy testing out some of the newest wine coolers on the market today. Some of the best known wine cooler manufacturers are Franklin Chef, Avanti, and Amcor, but there’s another contender on the wine cooler market: NewAir. Primarily known for their line of portable air conditioners, NewAir’s new wine coolers are surprisingly affordable, yet feature several bonuses that you’ll usually find in pricier units. We tested the new NewAir AW-211ED wine cooler and here’s what we thought:

First Impressions:
The NewAir AW-211ED was definitely esthetically pleasing and housed in a sleek, black cabinet with stainless steel door. It’s surprisingly compact given its large bottle capacity, and comes with an easy-to-control digital panel with LED light for precise temperature settings. The racks within the cooler are made out of heavy-duty, yet modern-looking chrome, and there was even an internal LED light that increased visibility and provided a nice glow.

Bottle Capacity:
Despite its tower design and space-saving body, the NewAir AW-211ED had a large capacity and was able to hold 21 bottles of our favorite vintages. This was more than enough for us home wine drinkers.

Thermoelectric Technology :
There are generally two types of wine cooling technology out there: compressor and thermoelectric. Compressors seem to be a bit dated, as most people nowadays are looking to thermoelectric coolers. Because thermoelectric wine coolers do not have many moving parts, they do not vibrate and are quiet. Furthermore, because thermoelectric wine coolers such as the NewAir AW-211ED are better at storing and aging wine because they cause less sedimentation that can occur with vibration.

Dual Zone Chambers:
As mentioned, if you’re storing more than one type of wine, you’ll need a wine cooler with at least two temperatures. Dual temperature wine coolers have upper and lower cabinets that are independently refrigerated chambers with separate temperature control capabilities. The NewAir AW-211ED utilized dual zones and allowed us to chill our bottles of Cabernet and Riesling at once.

We were really impressed with the NewAir AW-211ED thermoelectric wine cooler. Not only did it perform as well as advertised, it was also priced at less than $200, making it a steal.

NewAir AW-210ED Wine Cooler: An Affordable Way to Store Your Wine

Wine can conjure up images of class and elegance, and the key to enjoying wine to its fullest is proper wine etiquette. Whether it’s the temperature of the wine, age of the wine, or foods it’s served with, every small detail counts.

One of the most important steps you can take to truly enjoy a bottle of wine’s true aroma is proper storage. As one of the basic tenets of wine etiquette, wine storage is imperative due to the chemistry that gets altered with environmental or temperature changes. Storing it at a temperature that is too cold will cause it to lose its flavor notes while extremely warm temperatures will accelerate the wine’s aging process. Furthermore, temperature fluctuations can either enhance the bouquet of certain types of wine or disguise its defects.

Generally speaking, red wine is best served between 62-65°F, while white wine should be appreciated when it is between 58-62°F. Also, sparkling wine and champagne should best be served at 45°F. As such, one of the best ways to ensure proper wine storage temperature is via a home cellar, but this may be impossible for even the most serious oenophile due to cost or space constraints. Therefore, wine coolers and refrigerators are a cost-effective way to serve your finest vintages.

There are several types and models of wine coolers available depending on cost, needs, and desires, but when choosing a wine cooler, determine how many bottles of wine you intend to chill, then add on more capacity to allow for a growing collection. Next, figure out what type of wine you will be storing. If you have only reds or whites, a wine refrigerator with only one chamber will be sufficient, but if you need to store both types, a 2-temperature zone wine refrigerator is absolutely essential.

To take the guesswork out of choosing a wine cooler, our product team has been testing a number of popular brands and models. Avanti, Amcor, and Franklin Chef are just some of the most well-know wine cooler manufacturers, but NewAir, a company most known for its portable air conditioners and swamp coolers, has also developed their own line of affordable, feature-rich wine coolers. We were fortunate enough to be test the new AW-210ED wine cooler and here are our findings:

Inital Impression:
When we first received the NewAir AW-210ED, we were definitely impressed with its sleek, hi-tech styling. The glass door was large and durable, while the 7 slide out shelves and racks within the unit were chrome plated. The digital control panel was extremely user-friendly, and the interior of the wine cooler even came equipped with a soft blue LED light that increased visibility and provided a nice glow. Furthermore, the AW-210ED’s upright tower design helped save space. In fact, the NewAir AW-210ED fit nicely into the corner of our office and was non-obtrusive.

Bottle Capacity:
As mentioned above, one of the first things you should keep in mind when choosing a wine cooler is the bottle capacity. A wine cooler can hold as little as six bottles to some units which can hold up to 500. The NewAir AW-210ED wine cooler had a 21-bottle capacity which was more than enough space for us budding connoisseurs.

Thermoelectric Technology:
There are primarily two types of wine cooling technologies: compressor and thermoelectric. Most people prefer thermoelectric units because they do not have many moving parts and are very quiet. Also, thermoelectric technology is better at preserving and aging wine because it lessens sedimentation that can occur with vibration. The NewAir AW-210ED was a thermoelectric wine cooler that provided silent, vibration-free operation.

Dual Chambers:
Also as mentioned above, having a wine cooler with at least two temperature zones is important if you’re storing more than one type of wine. A wine cooler with dual temperature zones means that the cabinet’s upper and lower zones are specialized, independently refrigerated chambers with separate temperature control capabilities. The NewAir AW-210ED wine cooler had two zones which allowed us chill our favorite bottles of merlot and chardonnay at once.

Overall, at less than $250, the NewAir AW-210ED was not only more affordable than some of the other wine coolers we tested, it also offered many of the same features we found in pricier models.

NewAir ACP-1000E: Best Portable AC Under $300!

During the middle of summer, rising temperatures can be extremely stifling and can even contribute to a host of severe and potentially life-threatening health problems such as heatstroke. As such, finding an efficient method of cooling is an absolute necessity. One of the most cost-efficient ways to stay cool is obviously through the use of electric or ceiling fans, but these often do little when it comes to significant temperature reductions. Swamp coolers are also gaining popularity as a “green” way to cool, but these appliances are only suitable for dry, arid climates such as the American Southwest. Therefore, how is one to stay cool and comfortable without having to deal with sky-high energy bills?

Thankfully, the answer lies in a relatively new invention: the portable air conditioner. Compact, lightweight, and requiring no permanent installation, portable air conditioners can be a lifesaver during the sizzling summer months because they offer efficient spot cooling for a fraction of the cost of a central air conditioning system. Moreover, because they do not require permanent installation and are fully mobile, they are excellent for areas that cannot accommodate traditional air conditioning units such as apartments or condominiums.

However, keep in mind that most portable air conditioners are priced slightly higher than window units with similar cooling capacities, but the convenient installation and mobility of portable ACs is worth the price premium. Some no-frills models can be had for around $200, but we found these to often be lacking in power and features. Therefore, on average, a quality portable air conditioner will cost around $400 and upwards. Nonetheless, in our product team’s quest to find the best portable air conditioner on the market, we’ve actually come across one of the best values in portable air conditioners out there with the NewAir ACP-1000E. Priced just under $300, the NewAir ACP-1000E not offered excellent cooling, it also functioned as an air circulator, dehumidifier, and air purifier. After testing this unit in a 200 square foot bedroom of a 1000 square foot apartment on a hot Southern California afternoon, here were our findings:

At a Glance
The NewAir ACP-1000E weighed approximately 70 pounds but came equipped with large, rolling casters for easy mobility. The unit sported a clean, white finish that was modern, yet discreet, and when placed in the corner of our bedroom, we found it to be non-obtrusive. The NewAir ACP-1000E also had an easy-to-read LCD screen with push-button controls. The fan output speed, air oscillation function, and thermostat were easily adjustable, and the inclusion of a remote control allowed us to operate the NewAir ACP-1000E from across the room.

Cooling Abilities:
Many room air conditioners only feature 6,000 to 8,000 BTUs of cooling power which makes them only suitable for the smallest of spaces. However, NewAir claimed the ACP-1000E portable AC had a verified 10,000 BTUs of cooling and could sufficiently cool areas up to 200 square feet. We found this to be true, and while the square footage of our testing room would have been considered the maximum area that this unit could handle, we felt that the ACP-1000E provided enough cooling power that would make it even suitable for larger bedrooms or even living rooms under the right climate conditions.

Condensate Removal:
Because portable air conditioners use the refrigeration cycle to cool and remove moisture from the air, they also function as dehumidifiers. The NewAir ACP-1000E portable AC was especially suited for this purpose, as it had the ability to remove up to 95 pints of water per day. In addition, because this united utilized auto-evaporative technology, this negated the need to empty water buckets (especially humid climates which will still need to deal with some condensation, though significantly less than with older-style portable ACs).

Air Cleaning:
One of the greatest features of the NewAir ACP-1000E was the fact that it came with a built-in ionizer for particle abatement. Moreover, the washable air filter helped remove larger particulates like dust and hair.

Overall, we found the NewAir ACP-1000E portable AC to be one of the most affordable, yet feature-rich models around, and we were definitely impressed with its cooling ability. For a value-priced portable AC that will deliver many of the functions found in pricier models, the NewAir ACP-1000E is definitely a great buy.

NewAir ACP-1000H Portable AC Review - Great Features; Great Value!

Temperatures are climbing and many of us are scrambling to ways to escape the imminent summer heat. Unfortunately, for apartment dwellers or those who cannot make use of central air conditioners or window units due to cost or size restrictions, staying cool may involve the use of an open window and an electric fan.

The good news is that there is a cooling option for those who live in areas that cannot accommodate traditional air conditioners. Although portable ACs are a relatively new invention, they have the ability to significantly lower temperatures without permanently installing an outside or central unit. Instead, portable air conditioners are almost like simpler versions of window ACs because they utilize the refrigeration process to cool the air. However, instead of breaking into a wall or reconfiguring a window, portable air conditioners simply require venting out a window, drop ceiling, or wall through the position of a flexible hose. A box-like frame holds the cold and hot side of the air conditioner, and during the cooling process, moisture is removed out of the air and used to cool the unit itself. Therefore, not only do portable ACs cool the air, they also dehumidify it, making them excellent for humid climates.

In our quest to find the best portable air conditioner, our product team has come across several models with different features and in different price ranges. Across the board, one of the most popular features we’ve seen is auto-evaporative technology. Older portable air conditioner models often came with drain buckets which collected the condensate from the air. Subsequently, these receptacles would have to be emptied periodically. However, evaporative cooling technology means that most of the condensate is evaporated into the air. Nonetheless, in especially humid climates, keep in mind that some moisture will still need to be collected and removed anyway.

That said, one of the most recent portable air conditioners we’ve reviewed is the NewAir ACP-1000H portable air conditioner. This unit was tested in the 400 square foot living room of a 1,000 square foot studio apartment on a warm, 85° F Southern California afternoon and here were our findings:

First Impression
The NewAir ACP-1000H portable AC was more compact when compared to several other units we tested. Large, rolling casters allowed us to move it from the living room to the bedroom with ease, and the white housing was not obtrusive in the least bit. We also found the electronic display panel to be easy to read, and the remote control was a nice touch. In fact, we were to be control the unit from about 15 feet away without any problems.

BTUs
We found that a lot of manufactures tend to overstate their BTU ratings, but this wasn’t the case with the NewAir ACP-1000H portable AC. NewAir claims this unit has 10,000 BTUs of cooling power with a thermostat range of 61° F to 88° F, and this was more than enough to cool a small area such as the one we tested. In fact, in terms of cost to cooling capacity ratios, this unit offered us 10,000 BTUs of cooling power for what it would have cost us to purchase a smaller, less efficient 8,000 BTU portable air conditioner.

Noise
This portable AC had a decibel rating of under 51 dB, and we found that this didn’t interfere with our environment in the least. In fact, we had it running with a television at the same time at the highest setting, and while we could hear it working, it wasn’t disturbing.

Auto-Evaporative Technology
As mentioned above, auto evaporative technology is one of the newest features offered by many advanced portable air conditioners, and the NewAir ACP-1000H was no exception. Because our environment wasn’t too humid, we didn’t have to worry about the condensate.

Multiple Appliances in One
Because portable ACs remove moisture from the air, they also act as dehumidifiers. However, in addition to cooling and dehumidifying the air, the NewAir ACP-1000H portable air conditioner also came with the addition of three other built-in appliances: a fan, heater, and air purifier. When not in cooling mode, the NewAir ACP-1000H acted as a fan with oscillating louvers. The inclusion of a 10,000 BTU space heater meant that for the price of an affordable portable AC, you would also get a space heater, making this unit suitable for year-round use. Moreover, to address indoor air pollutant issues, NewAir also designed a built-in air purifier with the unit. A washable pre-filter caught large particles such as dust and dander, while the ionizer attracted smaller particulates onto electrically-charged plates (ieal for pet owners).

Therefore, after extensive testing, we found that the NewAir ACP-1000H proved to be a great portable air conditioner for spot cooling our apartment. Also, costing a little over $300, it was a great value when compared to pricier models with less features.

Portable AC Review: NewAir AC-12000E

With the summer months quickly approaching, many consumers may be thinking of turning to air conditioners for comfort. However, instead of having to pay sky-high electric bill this summer, why not spot cool with a portable air conditioner instead?

Because portable ACs are fully mobile, compact, and require no permanent installation, they provide excellent supplemental or spot cooling in homes or offices both with and without existing central systems. In fact, for those residing in condominiums or apartment buildings, installing traditional air conditioners may not be feasible due to size or building constraints. Therefore, instead of suffering through the summer, a portable air conditioner may be your best bet to beat the heat.

Portable ACs allow you to conveniently and cost-effectively take control of indoor temperatures, and when used correctly, they may provide you significant energy savings. Portable ACs, like window or central air conditioners, utilize the refrigeration cycle to lower temperatures and also act as dehumidifiers because they remove condensate from the air. Therefore, they are best suited for areas with higher humidity levels.

Unlike window units which pull air from the outdoors to cool a room, portable ACs use indoor air. This warm air is dehumidified and the collected condensate is either collected in a bucket or tank, or in more advanced portable air conditioners, the amount of resulting liquid can be removed or reduced through the use of self-evaporative technology. In addition, portable air conditioners will also require venting hot air through an exhaust hose that extends outside a window, through a drop ceiling or through a wall, but this can be accomplished with a window kit that is usually included with the portable AC.

With that said, there are so many different models of portable ACs on the market, and you may feel overwhelmed when shopping for one. We tested a variety of portable air conditioners and rated them in terms of size, cooling efficiency, and features, and one of the best models we found was the NewAir AC-12000E portable air conditioner.

At First Glance
Compact and equipped with casters for easy portability, this portable air conditioner was surprisingly space-saving and weighed 50 pounds (unlike some other models which we found to be extremely bulky and obtrusive). The sleek silver finish on this portable air conditioner gave the unit a stylish appearance that easily complimented the interior of our product editor’s 900 square foot studio apartment.

Cooling Capacity
The NewAir AC-12000E offered an impressive 12,000 BTUs of cooling power – making it one of the most compact models in its BTU class. In fact, when the unit was initially tested, we were wary of its BTU ratings since many manufacturers often over-exaggerate this measurement as a way to promote their products. However, the NewAir AC-12000E really delivered in terms of cooling power. The manufacturer also stated that this unit would be perfect in rooms up to 400 square feet in size, and this was true. The NewAir AC-12000E did an amazing job of cooling the apartment’s 300 square foot bedroom (and could probably cool a room significantly larger than ours).

Auto-Evaporative Technology and More
Another great feature of the NewAir AC-12000E was the fact that it utilized auto-evaporative technology. Since most of the condensed water removed from the air was expelled through the main exhaust hose, this dramatically cut down on the amount of water that had to be emptied from the tank. Furthermore, other impressive features included a very high energy-efficiency rating of 14.46 EER; a clear and vivid electronic display panel with remote controlled operation; and built-in emergency condensation container that prevented damage. Finally, in terms of sound levels, the NewAir AC-12000E produced less than 54 decibels, making it much quieter than the sound of normal conversation (60 decibels) and perfect for bedroom use.

Overall, at $389.95, the affordable NewAir AC-12000E portable air conditioner exceeded our product team’s cooling expectations and boasted a number of features normally found in more expensive models.

Maximize Your Air Conditioner's Efficiency This Summer

Studies have shown that heating and cooling systems account for over half of a household’s energy bill, and air conditioning itself uses almost 16% of total electricity (more than any other household appliance). Therefore, if you’re looking to cut down on your electric bill, addressing your cooling costs can result in significant savings and the following 5 tips can help:

1. Set Your Thermostat as High as Possible: For maximum savings, set your thermostat to 78°F or higher, as each degree setting below 78°F will increase your energy consumption by 8%. Also, if you don’t have one already, install an inexpensive programmable thermostat. These devices will optimize your home’s heating and cooling systems by automatically adjusting the temperature during low-occupancy hours.

2. Shade Sun-Exposed Walls and Windows: Whether you’re using a central, window, or portable air conditioner, be aware that direct sunlight streaming through your windows can raise temperatures significantly and substantially increase your cooling costs. Be sure to shade windows with drapes, curtains, or even trees and brushes when possible. Also, keep in mind that exterior shading is generally more effective than interior shading.

3. Use a Ceiling Fan in Conjunction with Your AC: Ceiling fans create air movement that can result in a 4°F drop in temperatures, and when used with an air conditioner, this allows you to set the thermostat higher than normal. Also, because ceiling fans generally use the same amount of electricity as a standard light bulb, it will only cost you pennies a day to operate.

4. Regularly Clean Filters: This is especially important during the cooling season. Be sure to clean your AC’s filter every month, as a dirty filter will result in decreased cooling efficiency and greater energy consumption.

5. Properly Seal Doors and Windows: When cool air escapes through cracks and openings such as doors as windows, don’t forget to weather-strip and caulk. Moreover, close the damper to the fireplace when it’s not in use to prevent cool air from escaping.

How to Throw a Great Outdoor Party

With springtime now upon us, parties may start moving from the living room to the backyard, and whether you’re hosting an informal barbecue with the neighborhood or plan on throwing a stylish starlit cocktail party, follow these easy tips to ensure a good warm-weather time will be had by all.

Setting Up
To make plating and cleaning easier, use disposable utensils and plates. To keep bugs from crashing your party, use an upended wire-mesh colander on top of fruits and vegetables, and loaf pans for stacked hamburger buns.

Creating Ambiance
Decorating for your backyard party can be as simple or as elaborate as you’d like. Summer dinners outdoors can become elegant affairs with a little help from inexpensive decorative items such as hanging lanterns or jelly jars, and don’t forget lighting. If you don’t wish to purchase separate light for your occasion, many local rental centers can provide with you these and also give you advice for your particular lighting needs.

Keep Your Guests Comfortable
If you live in an especially hot climate, even outdoor parties can have your guests sweltering. To keep everyone comfortable, pay attention to the weather. If you live in a dry, arid climate, outdoor misting fans such as the Windchaser WC163 are a great way to stay cool. On the other hand, if the outside temperature tends to dip in the later hours, patio heaters not only add a touch of class to a drab yard, but keep your guests nice and cozy as well.

Setting the Table
Decorating your outdoor dining table doesn’t have to be a chore. For simple, yet sophisticated centerpieces, place fresh fruit and flowers on small gift boxes covered in white gift wrapping; use brightly colored wrapping paper and pinking shears to create an inexpensive, yet chic table runner (and secure with double-sided tape); use cupcake foils to make elegant, yet disposable votive holders; and tie down the tablecloth and runner with twine to prevent them from blowing away in the wind.

Food
If you decide to offer food at your party, have as much prepared as possible before the soiree begins. If you are planning to barbecue, have it almost ready before your guests arrive, or even opt for quick-cooking food such as hamburgers or hot dogs. An even better idea is to set up a buffet table with a variety of foods so that guests can choose the different items they want.

Drinks
Beverages are an absolutely crucial part of a successful outdoor party, and when it comes to party drinks, a keg of beer is always welcome. Cocktails are another great idea, but to keep things simple, decide on two or three simple cocktails such as martinis or margaritas (from a mix to make it even more effortless) and allow your guests to choose which they’d like to imbibe. Not only does this save you money on ingredients, but time as well.

Also, when it comes to outdoor party drinks, make sure you have plenty of ice on hand and don’t rely on your refrigerator’s freezer! Either purchase ice from the grocery store and keep it in a cooler or invest in a portable ice maker such as the NewAir AI-100S. Relatively inexpensive and portable, this icemaker has the ability to produce as much as 28 pounds of ice cubes in as little as 15 minutes – making it the perfect addition to any party!

Household Fans Demystified

Fans are appliances that are used to produce airflow for the purpose of climate control, ventilation, or exhaust, and they can come in the form of any type of vane used for producing air currents.

Fans have been used since antiquity for applications such as personal comfort, climate control, removing dust, drying, and to provide drafts for fires. The first mechanical fans were those found in the Middle East in the 1500s called punkahs. These consisted of canvas-covered frames that were suspended from ceilings, and servants operated these primitive fans by pulling a rope connected to the frame to move the device back and forth.

It wasn’t until the late 1890s to the early 1920’s that fans were widely used. Combining both style and practicality, these fans were usually constructed of brass blades and cages. However, these fans were quite unsafe, as the cage openings were often big enough to fit fingers or an entire hand, and subsequently, it was common for people to suffer severe injuries as a result of their use.

Nonetheless, with the rise of the Industrial Revolution in the 1920s, mass-produced steel fans were made in many different shapes, sizes, and styles, and these devices became more affordable and accessible to homeowners across the country. Since then, fans have become more utilitarian, but they still provide cooling comfort for countless people around the world.

With that in mind, it should be noted that ceiling fans are some of the most popular among homeowners, and these are devices that are powered by hub-mounted rotating paddles which circulate air to produce a cooling effect. These fans are suspended from the ceiling and are used in the summer to provide cooling comfort. In addition, they are also often used in the winter in a reversed rotation to move warm air from the ceiling, down walls, and onto inhabitants in the room.

The following are some general questions commonly asked by consumers regarding household fans:

Q: What are “whole-house fans” and are they useful?
A:
Whole house, or attic fans are types of fans that are installed in homes and designed to push hot air out. With the flip of a switch, they pull cooler air from the outside through open windows and send hot indoor air through an attic. These can result in a five degree temperature drop in as little as five minutes. They can also be used to ventilate a home whenever the outdoor air is cooler – typically when the sun sets.

If properly installed, a whole house can cost-effectively bring the temperature down in your home, and when in the market for such an appliance, look for one that will fit between your trusses. Also don’t forget to pay attention to your air volume requirements.

Q: Is a fan really more energy efficient than an air conditioner?
A: If you’re looking for more air movement, use a ceiling fan or even a regular portable fan instead of relying on your air conditioner’s blower. Because air conditioners run about 50% of the time in the hottest days of the summer, this can cost much more to operate than leaving your ceiling fan on 24 hours a day, 30 days a month.

Also, depending on an air conditioner’s blower can sometimes result in leaks in your duct system. In turn, this can add more heat to your home, as hot air from the attic will be introduced into the air stream.

Q: Why should I use a ceiling fan in the winter?
A:
It’s important to understand the temperature in a room varies in layers – the air near the ceiling is always warmer than the air near the ground due to the rising of warm air. With that in mind, ceiling fans can push warm air near the ceiling down the ground, and as a result, the heating system is not overworked when warming a room.

To use a ceiling fan during the winter, be sure to set the fan to run in a clockwise direction, as this will push the air up against the ceiling and down to the walls. Doing so will often help slash your energy bill by as much as 10% in the winter.

Q: Why is it necessary to use an exhaust fan?
A: In addition to small leaks and cracks found around openings such as doors or windows, the duct work used to distribute warm or cool air in your home will always be prone to some degree of leakage.

How to Buy a Compact Freezer

Compact freezers are a great way to buy foods in bulk and to store them for long periods of time, and in terms of energy efficiency, the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy notes that energy-efficient appliances include small freezers geared towards home use.

There are primarily two types of compact freezers: chest and upright. Compact freezer capacities usually range anywhere from 2 cubic feet to as large as 25 cubic feet. Chest freezers, such as the Sunpentown UF-310W, are great if you buy foods in bulk and store them for prolonged periods, or need to freeze bulky or large items. While they may take up a bit more floor space than upright freezers, they can be up to 25 percent more energy efficient because air doesn’t spill out when the door is open and they’re better insulated than upright freezers. However, the one downside to these types of units is that because they lack shelves, food can be difficult to organize.

On the other hand, if you only buy small amounts of food, upright freezers such as the Sunpentown UF-160S may be better, as the shelves make organization is snap. These freezers are also more compact and take up less floor space, but the door configuration makes them less energy efficient. Therefore, with that in mind, you should choose your freezer based on your freezing requirements and space constraints. Here are some additional tips on how to choose the right freezer for your household:

1. Keep in mind the size of your family. The more people you have to feed means the more food you will need, and to determine your household’s requirements, multiply the number of people in your family by 1.5 cubic feet.

2. Think about your food shopping habits. If you buy food in bulk packages, remember that one cubic feet of freezer space equates to roughly 35 pounds of food.

3. Find out how much space you have for a freezer, as this will influence your decision as to whether you need to buy a chest or upright freezer. Although many people like to keep freezers in their garage, many freezer manufacturers warn against this if there is a significant temperature fluctuation. For example, in hot weather, a freezer’s compressor must work overtime to keep food frozen, which in turn decreases the overall life of the compressor and makes it more prone to malfunction. As such, keeping the freezer in the basement may be a better option, but if you live in a relatively mild climate, putting the freezer in the garage should be fine.

4. Consider a freezer’s features. Choose a model based on the features you deem to be important, such as adjustable temperature control, self-defrosting features, and magnetic door seals which are safer and more dependable than traditional latches.

How to Choose an Energy Efficient Home Appliance

When shopping for a home appliance, you may be tempted to make your selection based on price alone. While you may save money on the initial purchase price of the unit, you may end up spending more money in the long run if you buy a pricier option.

Many home appliances may the look the same on the outside, but they vary greatly in terms of energy-efficiency and operating costs, and the more energy efficient an appliance is, the less it will cost to run. The cost associated with owning an appliance is related to three crucial components: the initial price, the cost of maintenance and repairs, and the cost of operation. Moreover, for big-ticket appliances such as refrigerators or washing machines, figuring out this cost analysis is crucial. Follow these simple tips when shopping for energy-efficient appliances:

Take into account both the purchase price and estimated energy use when deciding which brand and model appliances to buy, but also keep in mind that more energy efficient models may cost more money.

Ask your local utility company if they offer any programs with cash rebates or other incentives that are aimed at encouraging consumers to purchase energy-efficient appliances.

Pay close attention to the Energy Guide label. With the exception of kitchen ranges, microwaves, dryers, the FTC requires that the black and yellow Energy Guide label be attached to all new appliances. The Energy Guide label will list the following specifications:

- The capacity of the unit.
- The estimated annual energy consumption of the model (for refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, clothes washers, and water heaters).
- The energy efficient rating (for air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, boilers, pool heaters)
- The range of estimated annual energy consumption, or energy efficient rating

Look for the Energy Star logo, such as the one on the Amcor AHD65 dehumidifier. This is the symbol for energy efficiency, and the label was created by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy to help consumers both save money and minimize pollution. When an appliance has an Energy Star logo, this signifies that it is significantly more energy efficient than minimum government standards, and this amount is different for each product rated.
