1. Plan ahead
Make sure you go in with a plan and stick to it as much as you can. Do your research ahead of time to see what kind of items are on sale, and which ones may not be the best deals of the year. Clothes, accessories, and seasonal products will most likely be on huge sale, while electronic gadgets and products won’t be. After Christmas sales are a great way to stock up on holiday-related things you can use next year, since these items tend to be the most heavily discounted.
2. Don’t assume you’re getting a deal
End of the year sales are a way for stores to push out old inventory and make way for new things. But just because it’s Christmas, don’t assume retailers are giving you the best price. If you’re suffering from nasal congestion, dry cough, sinus irritation or dry skin, skip the over-the-counter medications and try something all-natural.
Here are some of our favorite home remedies that may help you out when you’re feeling a bit under the weather.
Blow your nose often
It may sometimes be tempting to sniffle and suck back in all that mucus, but getting rid of that germy mess is the right way to go. Blowing too hard can cause an earache, so press one finger over one side and gently blow out the other. Wash your hands every time you blow your nose.
Gargle salt water or drink hot tea
Gargling can moisten a sore throat, bringing you temporary relief. Gargle with salty water four times a day.
Drinking hot tea with honey will help relieve nasal congestion and prevent dehydration. It’ll soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat.
Apply a hot or cold pack around your congested sinuses
Either of these temperatures may help you feel more comfortable. Reusable packs are sold at drugstores, or you can opt to make your own. Heat a damp washcloth in the microwave for about 55 seconds for a hot pack. Use a small bag of frozen peas in place of a cold pack.
Use a humidifier to make the air more breathable
Symptoms from cold or flu are the most bothersome when you’re trying to fall asleep, so place a humidifier by your bedside, prop an extra pillow under your head, and feel your sinuses start to clear.
Humidifiers will moisturize your nasal passages and relax you. They emit water vapor or mist to increase moisture levels, and come in a variety of sizes.
The most affordable and convenient type of humidifier is a portable, single room use humidifier that can be placed on any tabletop.
Cool mist humidifiers are safe to use in a child’s bedroom and can cover a decently sized room. They’re the cheaper option and more energy-efficient, since no heating element is needed. On the downside, bacteria will accumulate if the unit isn’t regularly maintained.
Warm mist humidifiers are extremely soothing during the cold or flu system. They use steam to add moisture to the air. Since water is boiled in warm mist humidifiers, mold and bacteria usually don’t have the chance to grow. You must be very careful not to knock over a warm mist humidifier, since the heat can be very dangerous.
The optimum humidity level in a house is generally between 35 to 40 percent. While humidifiers aren’t miracle workers, they should help reduce the symptoms you feel when suffering from cold, flu and even allergies.
Stay rested
Help your immune system out and stay in bed as much as possible so all your energy is directed to the immune battle. Take advantage of your precarious condition and get your friends or family to cook dinner, and maybe even help out with some chores. You’re trying to fight a war, after all.

Out of nowhere last Thursday, we heard a sudden BOOM from the parking lot. Naturally, we all ran from our desks to peer out the window, to see what was going on. The giant thud was caused by a UPS truck inadvertently knocking down a streetlight pole. Timbbeerrr!!
I’ll point out, at least four Air & Water employees have accidentally backed into this same light pole. It’s randomly in the middle of the parking lot, with no real sidewalk or cement barrier around it as a warning. I hope that the UPS driver doesn’t get into big trouble. Luckily, the incident caused no harm to any person or property. We called SoCal Edison, Orange County’s utility company, to come fix the pole. Later that day when we were going home, the light pole, live wire, and debris had been cleaned up. An orange traffic cone was there in its place.
I vote that we don’t replace the street pole! The UPS driver wasn’t the first, and he won’t be the last, to hit that invisible street pole.

Air & Water, Inc. held its annual Summer Party last night at Cafe Grill, a small restaurant nestled away in Fountain Valley. I would never have found this bistro had it not hosted our summer bash. It was the perfect setting for an intimate workplace gathering. Almost our entire Air & Water staff of about 50 came out, which filled almost every table in the restaurant. The dinner was a pleasant way to end the summer, one of the air conditioning industry’s busiest seasons. Air & Water’s owner, Luke Peters, acknowledged all the hard work that the team has put in the last few months. Each manager recognized a member of their department who had performed particularly well.
We ended the night with a raffle. The winners were chosen at random for various prizes. I had my eye on the Nordstrom’s gift card and the beer-making kit! Lady luck was not on my side, but five lucky employees went home with some enviable loot.
Cafe Grill treated us to a surprisingly gourmet dining experience. The prix fixe menu offered several choices for the salad, entree, and dessert courses. Below is the grilled Atlantic salmon with a side of sautéed spinach, boiled potatoes, and yogurt dill sauce.
The vanilla crème caramel was literally dripping with rich caramel sauce.
Cafe Grill has a warm, French-themed decor which gives the restaurant a cozy ambiance. The servers go out of their way to be accommodating. The restaurant is a worthy destination for foodies looking for unpretentious gourmet food made with inspired ingredients. You’ll be surprised by little details, like French press coffee or the chef himself coming out to greet you. Best of all, the tucked away Fountain Valley locale allows for an incredible value! Team Air & Water ended their Summer 2010 softball season in sweet victory, defeating past rival Team Line Drive. The odds were against our team, comprising Air & Water employees and friends. Line Drive is a competitive team that travels to compete in tournaments. Line Drive flattened Air & Water during their first two meetings, winning 29:14 and 28:3.
The plan? Figure out an antidote for Line Drive’s intense offense, to keep them from racking up points. As late as the 6th inning, Air & Water was down by 3, but Line Drive had only scored 9 runs total.
The tables turned in the 7th inning, as Tony amped up his pitching style and quickly got the other team out. Air & Water had an outstanding final inning, scoring 7 runs to win the game.
The final score was Air & Water 13: Line Drive 10. Congratulations Team Air & Water! Team Air & Water will be restructuring for the next season, making the team co-ed. We
hope this is a precursor to an amazing Fall season!
