Baseboard Heaters: Facts, Tips and Tricks from A to Z
To allow proper airflow, keep the area around baseboard heaters free from obstructions.
The central heating core heats the cooler air at floor level and allows the lighter, warmed air to move upward into the room.
Baseboard heaters don't deliver heat using a fan, producing draft-free heating results.
These energy efficient units can heat each room separately, which may result in reduced energy consumption when unused rooms aren't heated.
The heating element contains a series of metal plates called fins that help send heat to a broader area.
Baseboard heaters provide great supplemental heat to the central heating system if you want to keep one room slightly warmer than the others.
The heating element on these units simply produces heat when electricity passes through it.
The initial cost to purchase and operate baseboard heaters is relatively inexpensive. No ductwork is required for installation and they're virtually maintenance free.
For maximum efficiency, just plan ahead because baseboards take awhile to heat a room compared to fan-assisted heaters.
Most units will keep the temperature accurate to within 1 or 2 degrees of the thermostat setting.
The low operating temperature of baseboard heaters decreases the risk of fire, but you should still avoid allowing any objects from coming into contact with them.
Minimal maintenance is required on these heating units because there are no moving parts. Still, it's wise to follow any and all maintenance instructions.
Usually come in neutral colors to blend in with any environment.
2 different baseboard heating options:
Basic baseboard heatersThe heating element is suspended inside the unit to eliminate expansion and contraction noises.
Hydronic baseboard heatersThe heating element is immersed in a heat transfer fluid that's sealed inside a copper tube. The non-flammable fluid continues to radiate warmth after the unit cycles off, providing a more consistent temperature.
Prevents wall discoloration with low operating temperatures. They can also be repainted to match any room.
There are no moving parts, fans or motors so these units operate extremely quietly.
Baseboard heaters feature a slim design and a situated close to walls, so they require little space.
These heating units are so safe to operate that they may be mounted over any floor covering, including carpet.
Each is controlled by a thermostat that's either located on the wall or directly on the unit. The thermostat tells the element when to activate and for how long.
Most baseboard heaters meet Underwriter's Laboratories standards for safety.
These heaters can be used in various locations such as remodeled areas, room additions, and new construction that may not have central heating, apartments and retirement homes.
Baseboard heaters can be configured to give you whatever you need. They come in various lengths, which means they can be used in oddly-shaped rooms and are designed for various BTU, wattage and voltage requirements.
Prevent eXcessive heating at night or when no one is home by setting the thermostat at the low end of the comfort range.
To remove dust and other debris, you must vacuum occasionally. This is especially necessary at the end of summer, when the most dust collects.
Baseboard heaters, and all space heaters in general are perfect for zone heating. Zone heating allows you to only heat the rooms or areas that are being used instead of your entire home to curtail energy consumptions and costs.
