Manage Humidity in Your Home: Luma Comfort HC12W Humidifier Rating & Luma Comfort HC10B Humidifier Review
Humidity & Your Home
There are four reasons to use a humidifier in your home.
- Relative humidity is too low
- You have babies or children in the home
- You own at least one furry pet
- There is a grandmother or grandfather present
How do you know if humidity levels are low?
There might be static electricity on blankets carpets and furnishings. You might have dry, itchy skin, irritated eyes, a dry, hacking cough, dry nasal passages, or chapped lips. Moreover, your furnishings, wood floors, and fixtures might be looking a little worn. Wood might be cracking, wallpaper or paint might be starting to peel, and the wood rungs on your dining room or rocking chairs might be loosening and popping out.
What causes humidity levels to drop?
When seasons change, either you will run your heating system to stay warm or you run your AC to stay cool. No matter which one you are using, both of these systems dry indoor air. Moreover, if you already live in a dry area, heating and cooling systems only cause indoor air to get that much drier. This can lead to serious health conditions like severely dry sinuses and bloody noses.
Why should I use a humidifier?
Humidifiers improve indoor air quality to prevent common health problems as mentioned above and they help protect the home. Ideally, the humidity level in a home should be about 30-50%, in the winter this number can sometimes drop to 10%. Use a hygrometer to monitor levels and determine whether a humidifier is applicable to your situation or not.
Other reasons it is important to try a humidifier. If you have a baby in the house, do not let them suffer for extremely dry conditions. Just like you, their nasal passages and throats can get dry and irritated.
Control static electricity in the home. As static electricity builds up on blankets, carpets, and furnishings pets can get shocked as can you and your children.
Also, consider any grandparents that might be living or visiting with you. Many have chronic illnesses or allergies than can get irritated because of the lack of moisture.
Maintaining proper humidity levels help
- Treat illness
- Protect furnishings
- Preserve your voice
- Moisturize the skin
- Create warmth
- Reduce snoring
- Hydrate plant life
Cold dry air in the winter makes it easier for colds and influenza virus to survive. Proper humidity levels actually slow the spread of cold and flu. It also helps with bronchitis. Cough and inflammation of the lungs can actually be relieved with a humidifier. Adding a little eucalyptus and or tea tree oil to the water can help thin mucous in the chest so it can be expelled.
What types humidifiers do I have to choose from?
There are several types of humidifiers available. Central, ultrasonic, and impeller humidifiers, evaporators, and steam vaporizers. The most common is the ultrasonic and impeller humidifier. This is typically portable and ideal for humidifying individual rooms and spaces. Ultrasonic humidifiers are energy efficient and virtually soundless. Impeller humidifiers have a fan inside that produces a slight whirring sound.

"The styling is great. It really works we now own three. Easy to fill and it operates with ease. We have a least one running all day and all night." - 1/6/2013
"Very easy to fill large water reservoir. extremely quiet, almost no noise at all. Produces a lot of moisture. Best humidifier we have ever owned!" - 2/25/2013
"My wife picked this up on a whim after she heard me complaining about how dry it felt in our bedroom. So far, I'm very glad she did.
- This unit produces a lot of mist, definitely more than I initially expected. The literature says it will work in rooms up to 650 sqft or something like that, and I believe it.
- The design is very cool. It doesn't look like any other humidifier I've ever seen - although that's not saying much.
- It comes with about 5 different/interchangeable pieces that can be used to change how tall the unit is. We use 2 of the pieces for a medium-sized look. I think the idea is to make it shorter if you want to put it on a shelf or table, or taller if you put it on the floor. Again, a very cool idea that I haven't seen before
- Remote control included, which is the easiest and quickest way to control the thing (see below)
- Controlling the unit without the remote takes much longer. There is just a single touch-screen area on the unit that turns it on, adjusts the settings up and then back down again. I know it's done for looks, but unfortunately you sometimes have to touch it over and over again to get to the setting you want. Luckily the remote helps
- You have to push the adjustable pieces together firmly when changing the height, otherwise the seams are pretty visible. Not a big deal, but if you're a perfectionist it can bug you
I like this thing so far, and my wife loves it. It looks great, and works even better. We've been happy with this brand so far - I reviewed one of their air coolers earlier this summer, and still love it - so we'll definitely keep them in mind for appliances moving forward." - 10/23/2012

"Bought this as a gift for my daughter and her husband -- they said it is so quiet and works like a charm! They are happy and so are we!" - 12/14/2012
"I got this for my little girl who had a bit of allergy. I didn't like it at first w/ tap water because it would leave white dust all over the place even when I set the thing to warm. Was a bit disappointed and wanted to return it but after a week of tap water, I switch over to distill water and the white dust was gone. I finally switch over to RO water and everything is good.
The sensor is on the left side of the unit and it is true that if you the mist land or get anywhere near it, it could shut itself down because it think the room is humid enough; however, I have turned the spout to the right and away from the sensor, it runs all night and check the room humid more correctly.
There are 3 settings for the mist. The high warm setting, the water will be gone in ~4hrs. But low warm setting, the unit will last the night and a few more hours into the morning. With low cold setting, the water last a bit longer.
after nearly a month of owning this thing, I'm happy with the purchase." - 5/30/213
