Frozen treats have been around since about the 10th century and the recipes have continued to evolve into what we recognize today as ice cream.
Early types varied greatly from culture to culture and were often a treat reserved for the very wealthy as the snow and ice to make them had to be brought from nearby mountains.
A home frozen treat maker actually makes a wide variety of tasty frozen desserts. In reality you can make a whole host of exciting frozen desserts including sorbet, gelato, frozen yogurt, frozen pudding, frozen custard, and even frozen drinks like smoothies, slushies, and margaritas.
Making ice cream and other frozen desserts at home can be so much more than just putting together ingredients to make something yummy; it's a great activity that can be tons of fun for the whole family. It's especially great for kids because they get to make their favorite treats and learn about cooking and science while doing it!
The process of making frozen desserts with a home machine is actually quite simple. Most recipes require simply mixing the ingredients and putting them into the maker. Turning the mixture into a creamy flavor takes place by freezing the canister and continually moving the frozen ingredients to aerate the mix and give it the familiar texture. Some home frozen dessert machines are totally automatic and require even less effort!
What to Look For in an Ice Cream Maker
There are several different things to consider when buying a in-home frozen treat maker. Many ice cream makers are designed to be placed in a freezer in order to turn your ingredients into a delicious delicacy. Some models require no pre-freezing, in this case frozen treats are ready in no time. Both models yield similar results but the electrically cooled option lets you make last minute desserts for an unexpected event.
One advantage of the simpler home frozen dessert makers that require pre-freezing and manual churning is that they can be used without electricity. With these models you are able to make your favorite flavors wherever you want. Make great treats in the backyard to avoid cleanup in the kitchen or use it at the local park during a picnic!
Most home frozen treat makers have a capacity between 1 and 4 quarts (an average store bought ice-cream container is 1.5 quarts). You have to decide how much ice cream you want to make with your home treat maker. Other features like adjustable speeds and candy crushers vary greatly from model to model. You should consider the benefit based upon how you intend to use your ice cream maker.
