Sizing Your Portable AC and Keeping Cool

It's not easy to find the right size air conditioning system for your home. You can measure square footage and try to find one that will be effective, but that's not the only determining factor.

You want your portable AC to be effective and efficient. There are a lot of factors that play a role in how effective and efficient an AC is. One of the most important factors is the room size. Additional factors might be fan speed settings, adjustable thermostat, louvers, CFM what type of refrigerant is used, and BTUs.

Knowing the size of the room you want to cool is the first step to maximizing cooling efficiency. Most air conditioners cool a room based on the amount of BTUs offered. BTUs - also known as British Thermal Units - measures an air conditioners cooling capability. The number of BTUs you need is determined by the size of the room you want to cool.

For example, a 10,000 BTU AC cools a 200-325 sq. ft. area, a 12,000 BTU air conditioner cools a 300-425 sq. ft. area. If you want to cool a 400-525 sq. ft. area then you need to purchase an AC with 14,000 BTUs.

Did you know that an air conditioner with too high of a cooling capacity will cycle off too quickly and one that has too low of a cooling capacity will not provide sufficient cooling? If you want to get the most out of your AC then you need to stop and measure the room you want to cool. After, shop by square footage and find a model that has the appropriate features.

If you're like most of the population, you're trying to cut energy costs and make eco-friendly purchases. If this is the case then choose an AC with a R410A refrigerant. This refrigerant is efficient and helps keep energy use down. Also consider other efficient options like Economy modes, sleep mode, and fan only. This allows you to use the AC without overusing it.
