Exhaust Fan Quick Guide -- All About Window Exhaust Fans
1. Why should I buy an exhaust fan?
Most homeowners have never considered using an exhaust fan to cool
their home. Now is the time to think about one, since exhaust fans
save energy and expense even more than either portable air
conditioners or evaporative coolers! The average exhaust fan only
uses 50 -150 watts, whereas the average air conditioner pulls 800
watts! Also, did you know that most of the heat in your home becomes
trapped in your attic? An exhaust fan will draw out this unnecessary
heat in order for your air conditioner to not require so much
energy. This will both save money on electric bills and help
preserve the lifespan of your air conditioner.
2. Are there different types of exhaust fans, and if so, which
should I choose?
There are three main types of exhaust fans: window, attic, and
bathroom.
3. What benefits come with a window exhaust fan?
Stale air will be replaced with fresh air when you use a window
exhaust fan. Window exhaust fans are best if an air conditioner is
too expensive or if an area or space cannot accommodate one. Here is
an interesting fact: an exhaust fan can replace the hot, stuffy air
in an average home in approximately two hours. Window fans are not
permanently installed, so one can be placed in almost any window and
still be moved later on. Window exhaust fans also come with
adjustable panels so that the fan is able to fit in nearly any size
window as well. Our most popular window exhaust fan is the Air King
9600.
4. What benefits come with an attic exhaust fan?
An attic exhaust fan is the best way to get rid of the hot air that
may be sitting in the upstairs of your home. This hot air would
normally cause the over-use of your air conditioner, but by venting
it out, you can reduce the overall temperature of your home. Attic
exhaust fans come in a wide variety of makes and models. You can
exhaust heat and/or condensation up and out with a ceiling exhaust
fan, or you can exhaust out with a wall attic exhaust fan. Yet,
there is still one more option! Now, it is possible to exhaust your
hot attic with a shuttered fan, to keep the elements out. Optional
thermostats will open and close the shutters when fans need to be
turned on or off. Our most popular attic exhaust fan is the Dayton
7F67.
5. How about a bathroom exhaust fan?
Bathroom exhaust fans remove moisture, warm air, and odors, in a
hurry! Bathroom fans come with more accessories than any other type
of exhaust fan. Available with fans, timers, lights, heaters, and
nightlights together! A timer makes sure that you are not wasting
energy when the exhaust fan does not need to be used (for those
forgetful family members!). A nightlight helps children or those
with night blindness to find the bathroom in the dark. Have you ever
stepped out of the shower wishing you had a heater to keep you warm
while you dry off? Have you ever actually (and dangerously!) brought
your space heater into the bathroom? You do not have to go to these
extremes anymore! Heating features are another option with bathroom
exhaust fans. Other units simply provide fanning without additional
lighting or heat. With so many options it is hard not to find what
you need. By far, our most popular bathroom exhaust fan is just this
- the fan/heater combination: the
Broan 658.
